Reality Television Star Shares Heartbreak Over Parental Disownment
Junaid Ahmed, a prominent figure from the reality television series TOWIE, has revealed the profound impact of his parents disowning him after he came out as gay at the age of 18. The 31-year-old star recently announced his engagement to his partner of two years, Joe Blackman. While this engagement marks a joyous occasion for the couple, it also brought a wave of sadness for Ahmed, as his estranged parents have not reached out to acknowledge the milestone.
Ahmed explained that his Muslim faith presented a barrier to his family’s acceptance of his sexuality. He recounted the moment he came out to his parents, stating that there was no discussion but an immediate rejection. Consequently, he left his family home in Peterborough shortly after and relocated to Essex, where he eventually found his breakthrough on TOWIE.
Despite years of attempts to reconcile, the relationship with his family remains fractured. Ahmed confirmed that his parents are aware of his engagement, with a family member having reached out. However, he expressed his heartbreak, saying, “it’s all I’ve ever wanted.” He added, “That’s just something I can’t change, but I never would let that affect me now with who I am as a person because it’s never going to change me. I am who I am; I’ll continue doing what I’m doing.”
In a gesture of continued hope, Ahmed plans to invite his parents to his wedding. He contrasted this with the warm reception he has received from his fiancé Joe’s family, stating, “My own blood couldn’t accept me or be happy for me, whereas the love that I found has.”
Cultural Celebration Planned for Wedding Day
Looking ahead to the wedding, Ahmed expressed his enthusiasm for incorporating his cultural heritage into the ceremony. He spoke of his love for traditional attire and his desire to feature Bhangra music and arrive on an elephant.
The proposal occurred during a recent TOWIE cast trip to Albania. Reflecting on his journey, Ahmed shared, “Never in a million years did I think I was going to get my happily ever after. Being gay and Muslim this is the fairytale I’ve always wanted.” He emphasized the support he has found, saying, “I may not have my family’s acceptance but I have my new family in Joe and his family. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m on cloud nine.” He credits Joe with helping him become his best self and showing him what true love is.
This engagement follows Joe Blackman’s previous relationship with TOWIE co-star Harry Derbridge. The two have since reconciled, and are now seen interacting positively in the latest series. Blackman and Derbridge, who were previously engaged in 2023, had announced plans for marriage and children before their split.
