Jack Draper on ‘Rock Bottom’: British Tennis Star’s Emotional Journey

British tennis player Jack Draper has candidly revealed he hit ‘rock bottom’ during a challenging period marked by injuries and a significant dip in his world ranking. The 24-year-old, once tipped as a potential superstar after reaching the US Open semi-finals in 2024, has faced a difficult 2026 season, struggling with fitness and consequently falling outside the automatic qualification spots for major tournaments.

A Dramatic Fall from Grace

Draper’s journey in 2026 has been a stark contrast to the promise shown just two years prior. Having achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 5 in June of the previous year, he now finds himself at 143rd. This drastic drop means he no longer automatically qualifies for Grand Slam events, a reality that has forced him to rely on wildcards, such as the one he received for the Cincinnati Open.

With the US Open later this month, Draper is yet to compete in any Grand Slam event this calendar year. The Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon have all passed without his participation, leaving New York as his final opportunity to compete on the biggest stage in 2026. This situation is far from ideal for the London-born athlete, who was beginning to establish himself following his breakthrough performance at Flushing Meadows.

The Emotional Toll of Setbacks

The emotional impact of these setbacks was laid bare in a recent interview. Draper described an instance in May where he became overwhelmed with emotion during practice due to severe knee tendinitis and arm soreness. “I was in so much pain,” he recalled. “I was running and my knee [hurt] and my hitting the balls and my arm was sore.”

More recently, the tears flowed during his first-round match against Terence Atmane at the Cincinnati Open. Reflecting on this distressing moment, Draper explained the depth of his feelings. “The reason I got emotional was that through all the challenges, you can forget who you are on the court,” he stated. “And last week I felt like I couldn’t give any more. I was emotional because I didn’t recognise the player I was out on the court due to my injuries and due to probably the way I’ve been feeling for a long time.”

Coping with Change and Starting Anew

Draper elaborated on the mental and emotional strain of his recent experiences. “Last week came from a place of, I think I had so much to focus on and manage, so much change going on in my tennis,” he said. “I got to [No.]4 in the world through doing the same things, the consistent work, the differences, and then went through this whole process of a lot of setbacks and a lot of struggle.”

He acknowledged the significant toll this period has taken: “That’s taken a lot out of me. But then at the same time, I’m in a position where I’m having to start again. That reality is difficult sometimes.” The shift from being a top-ranked player to rebuilding his career from a lower standing presents a considerable psychological challenge.

Finding Acceptance and Moving Forward

Despite the hardships, Draper expressed a sense of optimism and acceptance. He believes that hitting rock bottom can be a catalyst for resurgence. “When you reach rock bottom like that you can come back up again,” he noted.

Since the emotional episode, Draper has reported positive progress in his training. “I’ve practised really well, I’ve had amazing support from the people around me and you get to a point more and more of acceptance,” he shared. “We’ve definitely reached that acceptance phase now.” This newfound acceptance, coupled with strong support from his team, appears to be paving the way for his comeback.

Looking Ahead: Focus on Form and Fitness

While Draper’s immediate focus is on his first-round match against Martin Landaluce in Cincinnati, the ultimate goal for the British player is to regain consistent form and rebuild his physical conditioning. The results of individual matches are secondary to the overarching objective of establishing a solid foundation for the remainder of his season and beyond.

Draper’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the mental fortitude required in professional sports, particularly when faced with significant adversity. His openness about his struggles and his determination to rebuild suggest a resilient spirit ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
