The principal of Sydney’s Scots College has urged alumni and the wider community to refrain from online speculation following the arrest and charging of three students in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. Dr. Ian Lambert, head of the prestigious private school, issued a statement to the Old Boys’ Union emphasizing the need for caution and respect for the ongoing police investigation.

The incident reportedly occurred on July 22 in an alleyway in Bondi Junction. Three teenage boys, all students at Scots College, were arrested on Thursday, July 16, and subsequently charged by police. Two of the boys, aged 13 and 14, face charges of aggravated sexual assault in company and two counts of aggravated sexual touching. The third boy, also 14, has been charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault in company and one count of aggravated sexual touching.
The alleged victim is a 14-year-old girl. Police sources have indicated that the accused and the alleged victim may have known each other, and that alcohol might have been involved prior to the incident. The boys were granted strict conditional bail and are scheduled to appear before a children’s court on August 25.
Principal’s Message to the Community
In his communication to the Old Boys’ Union, Dr. Lambert stated that commenting on the specifics of the police investigation would be inappropriate. He specifically requested that alumni exercise restraint in their online discussions, warning that speculation, commentary, or the identification of young people involved could lead to significant harm and have serious repercussions.
“There is a police investigation underway and, for that reason, it would not be appropriate for the college to comment on the specific allegations or make findings about what may have occurred,” Dr. Lambert wrote. “I also ask Old Boys to exercise care in any discussion of the matter, particularly online. Speculation, commentary or material that identifies or targets young people can cause significant harm and may have serious consequences.”
While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Dr. Lambert stressed that the alleged behavior, if proven, is “never acceptable” and is “entirely inconsistent with the standards and values” upheld by Scots College. He also emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold without interference.
Upholding College Values Amidst Allegations
Dr. Lambert articulated that allegations concerning individual students should not be seen as representative of the entire school community. He stated, “That does not lessen the seriousness of the present matter, but neither should the actions alleged of a small number be allowed to stand as a judgement on the many thousands of boys and men who have carried the values of the college into their families, professions and communities.”
The school’s immediate priority, according to the principal, is the welfare of its current students. Staff, including pastoral care teams, counselors, and chaplains, are actively supporting students to help them process the information they are encountering and to reinforce the expected standards of conduct for all Scots boys.

Scots College, known as Sydney’s most expensive private school with Year 12 fees exceeding $50,000 annually, has confirmed its full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation. During their inquiries, police executed search warrants and seized several electronic devices from one of the residences. Additionally, authorities reportedly found and seized two replica firearms, a BB gun, three laser pointers, and a license plate believed to be stolen, all of which will undergo forensic examination.
The charges are serious, and if the allegations are proven in court, the individuals could face a criminal trial in the children’s court and potential custodial sentences.
