PLS Returns to Profitability Amid Lithium Price Surge
SHARE

Pilbara Minerals (PLS) has announced a significant return to profitability, posting a net profit of $526 million for the past financial year. This marks a dramatic turnaround from the $196 million loss incurred the previous year, driven by a substantial recovery in lithium prices after a prolonged period of depressed values. The company’s financial resurgence is directly linked to the battery material’s price doubling over the last twelve months.

Lithium Price Recovery Fuels Profitability

The average realized price per tonne of lithium concentrate experienced a remarkable increase, leaping from $US672 to $US1488 – a gain of 121 percent. This surge in value significantly boosted PLS’s total revenue, which reached $1.93 billion. Specifically, higher-grade SC6 lithium spodumene, a key product for the company, saw its price climb from $US769 per tonne to $US1708 per tonne over the financial year.

In recognition of the improved financial performance, PLS declared a final fully franked dividend of 5 cents per share. Managing Director and CEO Dale Henderson described the past financial year as a record for the company, underscoring its agility in adapting to evolving market conditions.

Strategic Response to Market Shifts

“As the lithium market strengthened, we acted — bringing idled capacity back into production and shifting our focus decisively from defence to growth,” Mr. Henderson stated. “That preparation is reflected in the results. We delivered record production of approximately 880,000 tonnes while reducing unit operating costs by 9 percent, generating $1.1 billion of underlying EBITDA at a 59 percent margin and $1.4 billion of cash margin from operations.”

This strategic pivot included the proactive decision to restart the Ngungaju processing plant earlier in the year, with the first ore processed in early July. The Ngungaju plant, with an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes, is one of two processing facilities at PLS’s flagship Pilgangoora operation in the resource-rich Pilbara region of Western Australia. The company had flagged the potential restart of this plant back in January.

Long-Term Outlook for Lithium

Despite the increasing number of competitors also bringing idled lithium supply back online, PLS remains optimistic about the long-term prospects for the lithium market. Several domestic producers, including Mineral Resources, Core Lithium, and the Wesfarmers-SQM joint venture, are either reactivating dormant mines or expanding their existing operations.

Mr. Henderson addressed the current price rally at the Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, expressing his view that it is not indicative of a market bubble. He explained that the most accessible lithium projects globally were largely brought into production during the 2022 boom. Consequently, he believes there is a scarcity of new, easily deployable projects on the horizon.

Demand Drivers and Future Supply Challenges

The demand for lithium has also seen substantial growth in recent years, primarily fueled by the accelerating adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the robust expansion of battery energy storage systems (BESS). This increased demand, coupled with a tightening supply pipeline, underpins Mr. Henderson’s positive outlook.

“The supply response that we saw through 2022 has been and gone, and that the low-hanging fruit was effectively brought online during that period,” Mr. Henderson elaborated. “Fast forward to today, the next wave of supply needs to be much larger to keep pace with this much larger industry. The next wave of supply — it’s not obvious where that comes from, the low-hanging fruit has gone.”

He further noted that while some announcements regarding new supply have been made, particularly from existing operators like PLS with the Ngungaju plant restart, there are very few, if any, greenfield projects that have secured funding. Even for those that do, the speed at which they can reach market remains a significant question.

Financial Position and Future Investments

PLS concluded the financial year with a strong cash position of $2.29 billion, a substantial increase from the $974 million held a year prior. This healthy balance sheet provides the company with the financial flexibility to navigate market dynamics and pursue future growth opportunities.

The company’s ability to capitalize on the lithium price recovery, coupled with its strategic operational adjustments and a positive long-term market outlook, positions PLS for continued success in the evolving global energy landscape. The robust demand from the EV and energy storage sectors, combined with potential supply constraints for new projects, suggests a favorable environment for established lithium producers.
