Former reality television personality Skye Wheatley appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday to address a mid-range drink-driving charge. Wheatley, 32, is accused of driving with a blood-alcohol reading of 0.119, significantly above the legal limit for driving in Australia. The former Big Brother Australia star presented a subdued demeanor as she arrived at the Gold Coast courthouse, accompanied by another individual.

Court Appearance and Attire

Wheatley, a mother of two, arrived at the court building wearing dark, narrow sunglasses and frequently checked her mobile phone as she entered. Her attire for the court appearance was conservative, consisting of an oversized pale grey blazer paired with matching wide-leg trousers and a fitted white top. Delicate gold jewelry and open-toed heels completed her ensemble, along with a beige shoulder bag. Her blonde hair was styled in a neat bun, secured with a large claw clip, with a few strands framing her face.

Allegations and Previous Statements

The charges stem from an incident on Saturday when police reportedly approached Wheatley while her vehicle was parked outside a McDonald’s restaurant. Authorities allege she registered a blood-alcohol reading of 0.119. Wheatley has previously spoken about the charge, expressing deep regret and disappointment in herself. In a statement, she admitted to making a poor decision and taking full responsibility for her actions, acknowledging the need to face the consequences.

Wheatley indicated that she had remained at the McDonald’s location for approximately four hours, attempting to sober up before a passer-by alerted the police. While she felt the circumstances were relevant to understanding the situation, she stressed that they were not intended as an excuse for her behavior. “I made a really poor decision and I’m deeply disappointed in myself,” Wheatley stated. “There isn’t an excuse for what happened. I take responsibility for my actions and I know I have to deal with the consequences.”

Reflections on the Incident

The influencer reflected on how a single decision involving alcohol could lead to significant and lasting repercussions. She expressed hope that by speaking openly about her experience, others might be prompted to reconsider their own choices. “Don’t make the mistake I made. If you’ve been drinking, don’t take the chance. It’s just not worth it,” she urged.

Wheatley emphasized her desire not to have the specifics of her interaction with the police detract from her acceptance of responsibility. “I don’t want this to become about making excuses,” she said. “I made the wrong decision. That’s what I have to take responsibility for, and that’s what I’m doing.”

Seeking Support and Personal Change

Reports indicate that Wheatley has begun seeking professional assistance following the incident. She has reportedly received information regarding programs that offer access to therapists, psychologists, doctors, and other support services. The experience has also prompted her to re-evaluate her relationship with alcohol and the choices she makes when consuming it.

“I don’t just want to say sorry because I’ve been caught in a bad situation and then forget about it,” Wheatley commented. “I want to learn something from this and actually make changes so I’m never sitting in this position again.”

Public Persona and Message to Followers

Wheatley gained prominence following her appearance on Big Brother Australia in 2014 and has since cultivated a substantial following across various social media platforms. She cited her long-standing connection with her audience as a key reason for her decision to speak candidly about the alleged offense.

“I’ve shared so much of my life with people over the years – the good and the bad,” she explained. “I’m human and I got this wrong. I can’t undo it, but I can decide what I do from here.”

She directed a strong message to her followers, advising them against gambling with their safety after consuming alcohol. “If you’re questioning whether you’re okay to drive, don’t,” Wheatley advised. “Get an Uber, call someone, leave the car where it is. Whatever inconvenience that causes is nothing compared to what can happen when you make the wrong decision.”

Looking Forward

Wheatley stated her readiness to face the consequences of what she described as a serious error in judgment. “I’m disappointed in myself that I put myself in this position, but I’m going to learn from it,” she said. “Hopefully someone else can learn from my mistake too.”

The court appearance marks a significant step in the legal process following the drink-driving charge. Wheatley’s candid reflections highlight a personal journey of accountability and a commitment to making behavioral changes.
