A Look Back at Lauri Hendler’s Early Career

Hendler first captured national attention in the early 1980s, starring as Julie Kanisky Maxwell, the middle daughter, in the NBC sitcom Gimme A Break! The show, which aired from 1981 to 1987, centered on a former singer, played by Nell Carter, who becomes the housekeeper for a widowed Police Chief and his three daughters. Hendler was a prominent figure in the series for its first five seasons, with her character eventually written off in the sixth and final season after marrying and becoming pregnant.

Her acting career, however, began much earlier. Hendler was a child model before she even reached her first birthday, according to reports from the time. Born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, she and her mother, who raised her and her two siblings, relocated to California. Hendler’s early television work included guest spots on numerous well-known series throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Her notable appearances included roles on CHiPs, Lou Grant, Three’s Company, Magnum, P.I., and Mr. Belvedere. In 1983, she also starred alongside Michael J. Fox in the television movie High School USA and was a frequent guest on popular game shows of the era, such as $25,000 Pyramid, $100,000 Pyramid, and Super Password.

Continued Presence in Television and Film

Following the conclusion of Gimme A Break!, Hendler continued her acting career, taking on guest roles in a variety of television programs. While she did not achieve the same level of consistent stardom as she did on the sitcom, her presence remained a familiar one for viewers. Her adult acting credits include appearances on shows such as Harry and the Hendersons, Charmed, The West Wing, Becker, Without a Trace, and ER.

More recently, Hendler has made appearances on contemporary series, demonstrating her enduring career. These include roles in the popular sitcoms Young Sheldon and The Goldbergs. She also featured in the critically acclaimed Netflix sketch-comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.

Personal Life and Recent Sighting

Hendler married Steven Reizes in 1990. The recent sighting in Los Angeles marked a rare occasion for the actress, who tends to maintain a private personal life. During her outing, she was seen wearing a pale blue denim dress layered over a long-sleeved pink shirt, presenting a casual yet youthful appearance.

After graduating from Beverly Hills High School, Hendler pursued higher education at UCLA while continuing her professional acting work. Her journey in the entertainment industry, which began in infancy, has spanned decades, showcasing a consistent, albeit often behind-the-scenes, presence in television and film.

A Legacy in ’80s Television

Lauri Hendler’s role as Julie Kanisky Maxwell on Gimme A Break! remains a significant touchstone for many who grew up watching ’80s television. The character was a relatable figure in a popular family sitcom, contributing to the show’s six-season run. Her early start in the industry and continued work in guest roles highlight a sustained career in acting. While her public appearances are infrequent, her recent sighting offers a glimpse of the former child star, now navigating her sixties, still engaged with the world and her enduring connection to her entertainment past.
