Tony Romo Addresses DUI Arrest, CBS Future Amid New Citations

Former NFL quarterback and current CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo has publicly addressed his recent drunk-driving arrest in Milwaukee, acknowledging responsibility for his actions and confirming ongoing discussions with the network regarding his future employment. The arrest, which occurred on July 23, has led to significant scrutiny and a temporary leave of absence from his broadcasting duties.

Romo Breaks Silence on OWI Arrest

For the first time since his arrest, Romo, through a spokesperson, issued a statement on Thursday night. “Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” the statement read. This marks a significant shift from his previous silence following the incident.

The former Dallas Cowboys star was initially pulled over in his Jeep and subsequently charged with operating while under the influence (OWI) after reportedly performing poorly on sobriety tests. Bodycam footage of the arrest later surfaced and garnered considerable public attention.

New Citations Add Complexity to Case

Romo’s statement comes shortly after it was revealed that three additional citations have been added to the original charge. These new citations include first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possession of open intoxicants within his vehicle. These charges compound the initial OWI offense.

He is scheduled to appear in court on September 21 to address these four citations. This date falls just two weeks into the upcoming NFL season, a season during which his broadcasting role remains uncertain.

Details of the Arrest

According to initial reports, Romo was reportedly on his way home from a golf tournament in Milwaukee when he was stopped by law enforcement. At the time of the stop, he informed officers that he had not consumed any alcohol and stated he was en route to visit his grandparents.

However, a subsequent police report indicated that an officer discovered an “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” in the passenger area of his black Jeep. The presence of an open container further complicates the legal situation.

CBS Addresses Romo’s Future

Following the arrest and the subsequent release of the bodycam footage, CBS Sports placed Tony Romo, who reportedly earns $18 million annually with the network, on an indefinite leave of absence. During his absence, his broadcasting duties have been temporarily filled by former NFL player J.J. Watt.

CBS Sports president David Berson addressed Romo’s status in media interactions prior to the NFL season. Berson confirmed that the network currently has no immediate plans for Romo’s return to television. “It’s an evolving situation and therefore we are still assessing,” Berson stated on August 11. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.”

Berson emphasized that the matter is both a personnel and a legal issue for Romo, limiting the network’s ability to provide further details. “I hope you can respect and appreciate this is a personnel matter and a legal one for Tony, so I can’t speak to that aspect of things,” he added.

Ongoing Discussions with CBS

Romo’s spokesperson also confirmed that the analyst is actively engaged in conversations with CBS regarding the next steps in his career with the network. “We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps,” the spokesperson said.

The dual focus on resolving the legal proceedings and determining his professional future highlights the significant impact of the OWI arrest. Romo’s career, both on the field and in the broadcast booth, has been marked by success, making this period a critical juncture as he navigates these challenges.

Conclusion

Tony Romo’s public acknowledgment of responsibility marks a turning point following his July arrest. With new citations added to the initial charge and his future at CBS uncertain, the coming weeks will be crucial as he works to resolve his legal issues and re-establish his broadcasting career. The situation remains fluid, with both legal authorities and CBS Sports continuing to assess the developments.
