Tim Davies, the familiar face of weather on the Today show, has announced his departure after a seven-year tenure. Davies revealed his decision on Friday morning, stating that the timing felt right to step away from the demanding breakfast television schedule.

“This seems like the right time to step back, enjoy a sleep-in, take a break without a camera crew and prepare for my next adventure,” Davies shared. He reflected positively on his time on the program, describing it as “the best job on TV” and highlighting his role in delivering “good news, good vibes and a smile with each story.”

A Valued Team Member Departs

Steven Burling, director of morning television at Nine, expressed his appreciation for Davies’ contributions. Burling described Davies as a “much loved” member of the Today team, whose departure leaves “enormous shoes to fill.” He acknowledged the personal impact of the role, noting, “We are fully supportive of Tim laying down some roots after seven years of living out of a suitcase.” Burling extended his thanks to Davies for his dedication and predicted he would be “greatly missed by the team and the audience.”

A Nine spokesperson confirmed that Davies’ exit was voluntary and not a result of termination. However, his departure occurs amidst a period of significant change and challenges for the breakfast program.

Navigating a Shifting Landscape

The Today show has faced considerable pressure in the ratings, particularly since the departure of its long-standing host, Karl Stefanovic. Stefanovic exited the program in June. His former co-host, Sarah Abo, is currently on maternity leave, though she is expected to return to the show.

In the interim, a variety of Nine personalities have stepped in to fill the hosting roles. Among them is Samantha Armytage, a former host of rival breakfast program Sunrise, who joined Nine in 2024 after a 21-year career at Seven. While speculation suggests Armytage might join Today permanently, the primary focus remains on identifying a successor for Stefanovic.

Potential Replacements and Industry Trends

Traditionally, Nine has favored internal appointments for such high-profile positions. However, the network has been actively testing various on-air talents. Recent co-hosts alongside Armytage have included 9News Melbourne’s Tom Steinfort. Other individuals reportedly considered for the role include Joel Dry, David Campbell (currently hosting Today Extra), Nine sports presenter James Bracey, sports reporter Michael Atkinson, and David Woiwod, who currently co-hosts Seven’s Weekend Sunrise.

The decision-making process is complicated by evolving audience and advertiser preferences. There is a growing demand for fresh talent and formats across various platforms, including social media and podcasts. This trend presents Nine with complex choices as they aim to revitalize the Today show.

Ratings Context and Departure Timing

The Today show is currently trailing its main competitor, Sunrise, in national average viewers. On a recent Thursday, Today recorded 288,000 viewers, while Sunrise attracted 456,000.

Davies’ final appearance on the Today show is scheduled for September 18. This date falls immediately after Nine’s Upfront event, an annual industry gathering where the network typically reveals its programming and talent lineup for the upcoming year. His departure marks the end of an era for the show’s weather segment, leaving a vacancy that will be closely watched as the network navigates its future direction.
