Jetstar has successfully completed its inaugural test flight to the new Western Sydney International Airport, simulating a full passenger operation to validate ground handling procedures and infrastructure readiness. The flight, JQ7990 from Melbourne, arrived 14 minutes ahead of schedule at 9:16 am, carrying essential crew members to meticulously assess the airport’s taxi routes, aerobridge functionality, and refueling processes.

He added, “It’s quite a collaborative team effort between the different departments on the ground, both in the flight deck cabin coordination and with refuelling procedures.”

Recent incidents at Sydney Airport have prompted scrutiny of air traffic control staffing and workloads. Western Sydney International, however, employs a distinct digital air traffic control system. Human controllers monitor flights remotely from a facility in Eastern Creek, New South Wales, a setup that Captain Simes confirmed had no adverse impact on the A320’s landing. “It was seamless actually,” he reported.
Digital Air Traffic Control Integration

He indicated that Jetstar and other stakeholders are working closely with Airservices Australia to ensure sufficient resources are in place. “We’re working very closely with Airservices [Australia] on some of the issues that have been raised of late,” he said. “Of course we wouldn’t operate if the environment wasn’t safe,” Simes reassured, adding, “So we’re absolutely confident that Airservices are able to satisfy those requirements. And we’ll continue to work on the issues that need [to be addressed].”
Extensive Trial Program Underway
Matt Duffy, Chief Operating Officer at Western Sydney International, detailed the extensive testing regime implemented since the project’s inception last October. “There have been 77 trials since they began last October, or roughly two a week, every week,” Duffy stated. This rigorous schedule of trials is designed to systematically test and refine all aspects of the airport’s operations. “We built the asset, then we wrap people process around that asset…As we work through the trials, we learn more about the asset, then we take those learnings and put them back into our processes,” he explained.
Preparing for Passenger Launch
Duffy underscored that the trials are progressing on schedule ahead of the airport’s official opening for passenger flights on October 25. “Today’s trial flight represents an important part of our ongoing operational readiness program, which is all about preparing our staff, systems and processes to be as match-fit as possible when the airport opens for passengers next month,” he remarked.
Airline Commitments and Future Routes
Following its launch, Western Sydney International is set to become a significant hub for several airlines. Jetstar will initiate services with up to 14 weekly flights to Melbourne and daily flights to the Gold Coast, alongside three weekly services to Brisbane. These routes reflect strong initial demand, with Gold Coast services being increased from an initial plan of four per week. The airport will also welcome Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines as launch carriers. Furthermore, Vietnamese low-cost carrier VietJet has expressed interest in establishing routes to Vietnam starting in January 2027, with plans to extend services to Thailand later that year.
