Electra/Persona Review: Cate Blanchett’s Drama Fails to Haunt
SHARE

The National Theatre’s new production, Electra/Persona, starring Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss, has opened to a mixed reception, with critics finding the ambitious avant-garde drama ultimately fails to deliver the intended emotional impact. The two-part, two-hour performance, directed by Benedict Andrews, attempts to weave together ancient Greek tragedy with a modern psychological thriller, but struggles to maintain coherence and resonance.

A Tale of Two Halves: Electra and Persona

The first half of the production draws inspiration from the ancient Greek myth of Electra. In this segment, Nina Hoss portrays Electra, a princess consumed by a desire for vengeance against her mother, Clytemnestra, played by Cate Blanchett. Clytemnestra is accused of murdering Electra’s father, Agamemnon. The casting for these roles, as with many in the production, was determined by a coin toss on the night of the performance.

Following a brief, un-interrupted first act, the narrative shifts dramatically for the second half. This portion is inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s seminal 1966 film, Persona. Here, Blanchett takes on the role of Alma, a psychiatric nurse caring for Elisabeth (played by Hoss), an actress who has suffered a breakdown and fallen into silence on stage. As the play progresses, the lines between the two characters begin to blur, leading to a complex exploration of identity and mental health.

The Unraveling Narrative

It is in this second half that the production reportedly begins to lose its grip on the audience. Frustrated by Elisabeth’s muteness, Alma’s character starts to reveal deeply personal and unsettling details about her own life, including a past experience of group sex on a remote beach. The narrative then further evolves to touch upon themes of post-natal depression, intensifying the blurring of the characters’ identities.

While the performances are noted for their intensity, the play’s thematic shifts and departure from realism have been described as making the story increasingly impenetrable. Actors are left to provide explanations for their characters’ motivations, which some critics found to be contrived or unconvincing. The intention, it seems, was to create a haunting and thought-provoking experience, but the execution left many feeling detached rather than deeply affected.

Performance and Production Design

Despite the narrative challenges, both Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss are acknowledged for their compelling stage presence. Blanchett, known for her roles in films such as Lord of the Rings and Tar, brings a striking intensity to her dual roles. Hoss, too, is noted for her powerful performance, with descriptions highlighting her embodiment of the characters’ emotional turmoil, even to the point of appearing to ‘drip in blood, sweat, and tears’. The chemistry between the two lead actresses has been praised as palpable.

The production itself is visually slick, featuring a minimalist set design of amphitheatre steps. Director Benedict Andrews also employs hand-held cameras to provide intimate close-ups, integrating them into the performance. This technical approach aims to enhance the dramatic tension and draw the audience closer to the characters’ psychological states.

A Disconnect Between Ambition and Impact

Ultimately, Electra/Persona is a production that reaches for profound psychological and mythological depths but falls short of its ambitious goals. While the initial intrigue of the ancient myth and the subsequent descent into modern psychological drama hold some promise, the play’s disjointed structure and opaque thematic development prevent it from achieving the haunting effect it aims for. The review suggests that the play leaves the audience grappling with existential angst without providing a satisfying or resonant conclusion.

Conclusion: A Missed Opportunity for Emotional Resonance

Electra/Persona presents a bold attempt to fuse classical tragedy with contemporary psychological exploration, featuring powerhouse performances from Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss. However, the production’s complex narrative structure and abstract thematic elements ultimately create a barrier to emotional engagement. While visually striking and performed with considerable energy, the play struggles to connect with its audience on a deeper level, leaving a sense of confusion rather than catharsis. The ambitious fusion of myth and modern drama, while intriguing, proves to be more intellectually challenging than emotionally resonant.
