RBC Capital Markets Forecasts Significant Gold Price Surge
SHARE

Analysts at RBC Capital Markets are projecting a substantial increase in the price of gold, anticipating a climb towards the US$5,000 per ounce mark before the end of the year and potentially higher in 2027. This optimistic outlook contrasts with the metal’s current price, which has retreated from earlier peaks this year. The firm’s latest research report indicates a persistently bullish stance on gold, driven by a confluence of global geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

Gold’s Appeal Amidst Global Instability

Gold has historically served as a safe haven during times of uncertainty, and the current global landscape provides ample justification for this trend. Ongoing conflicts, such as the war in the Middle East and the protracted conflict in Ukraine, coupled with trade tensions, have created a climate of apprehension. RBC Capital Markets notes that investors are increasingly turning to gold as part of a “debasement” trade, a strategy that involves shifting investments towards tangible assets perceived to hold their value better than fiat currencies.

The firm’s report highlights a significant return of investor interest, estimating inflows of over 200 tons into the gold market this year. Furthermore, central banks, after a brief pause, are reportedly re-engaging with gold purchases. RBC anticipates that central bank activity will remain robust, contributing over 700 tons of inflows in both the current year and the next. This sustained demand from institutional investors and central banks is a key pillar of their bullish forecast.

The ‘Trump Factor’ and Gold Prices

Interestingly, RBC Capital Markets also points to the political climate in the United States as a potential driver for gold prices. The report suggests a notable negative correlation between the approval rating of former President Donald Trump and the price of gold. The uncertainties and risks associated with a potential second term have historically been associated with increased demand for gold. While macro-economic factors alone may not fully account for gold’s current valuation, its established reputation as a store of value and a hedge against currency debasement makes it particularly attractive in the prevailing environment. The firm is closely monitoring upcoming political events, such as the midterm elections, for further insights but is currently focused on gold’s increasing contextual appeal.

US National Debt and the ‘Debasement’ Trade

A significant and enduring factor supporting gold demand, according to RBC Capital Markets, is the substantial and growing national debt in the United States and other major economies. This mounting debt burden fuels interest in non-debasable assets like gold, as investors seek to preserve their wealth against potential currency devaluation. The report emphasizes that the combination of geopolitical risks, political volatility, and general market uncertainty across various asset classes amplifies gold’s role as a perceived safe haven and a reliable store of value.

RBC’s sustained forecasts, even during periods of temporary pauses in investment flows, are rooted in the belief that the fundamental context for gold remains unchanged. The underlying drivers of demand, stemming from global instability and economic concerns, continue to support a positive outlook for the precious metal.

RBC’s Gold Price Projections

Looking ahead, RBC Capital Markets has set its sights on a significant upward trajectory for gold prices. The firm identifies a medium-term “sweet spot” for gold prices ranging between US$4,500 and US$5,000 per ounce. More specifically, they are increasingly leaning towards their higher-end scenario, forecasting a gradual climb towards US$5,000 per ounce by the close of the current year. Their projections extend further, with expectations of even higher prices in 2027.

This forecast represents a substantial increase from the current trading price of gold, which was noted around US$4,485.10 per ounce at the time of the report. The firm’s confidence in this upward trend is underpinned by their analysis of investor behavior, central bank policies, and the persistent global uncertainties that continue to bolster gold’s appeal as a critical asset in diversified investment portfolios.
