Louisiana State University (LSU) has finalized its football roster, a move that appears to have resolved a significant controversy that threatened the program’s standing within the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The decision to finalize the roster without the inclusion of former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris effectively defuses a brewing scandal and secures LSU’s membership in the league.

SEC Confronts LSU Over Roster Controversy

The SEC had been poised to hold a meeting on Thursday to consider the drastic measure of expelling LSU from the conference. This potential expulsion stemmed from actions taken by LSU’s head coach, Lane Kiffin, who sought to add Wright and Harris to the team’s roster. Both players had previously played for Kiffin at Ole Miss during the previous season. Following their college careers, they signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents but subsequently enrolled at LSU in an unusual bid to resume their college football careers.

However, LSU has since added two other players to its 105-man roster, as reported on Tuesday night. This action officially closes the door on any possibility of Wright or Harris playing for LSU during the current season. The university has been approached for confirmation regarding these roster decisions.

Legal Battles and SEC Statements

LSU’s official roster for its opening week victory over Clemson listed only 103 players. Coach Kiffin had deliberately delayed finalizing the roster, apparently awaiting the outcome of a legal dispute with SEC rivals. The SEC escalated the situation by filing an amendment to a federal lawsuit against LSU in Alabama the previous Thursday. The conference announced it had scheduled a meeting for Thursday to deliberate on terminating LSU’s membership.

According to SEC rules, a minimum of two-thirds of the conference’s presidents must vote in favor of expelling a member institution. In a statement released on Tuesday, the SEC emphasized its members’ right to establish and adhere to agreed-upon governance procedures. ‘A commitment to those rules, and to the core principles of the Southeastern Conference, is an essential element of SEC membership,’ the statement read. ‘Today’s filing is necessary to defend that right and preserve the Conference’s ability to govern competition among its members.’

Kiffin’s Comments Fuel Controversy

The amended lawsuit also referenced comments made by Coach Kiffin during his halftime interview in LSU’s commanding win against Clemson. Kiffin remarked, ‘Imagine if we had pro players,’ a statement that the SEC alleged stood in stark contrast to the silence from LSU’s President and Athletic Director. The conference contended that Kiffin’s remarks confirmed a ‘lack of institutional control over the athletics program at LSU,’ a violation of SEC constitutional requirements.

Judicial Intervention and Athlete Representation

The situation took a turn the previous week when a Louisiana judge issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA. This ruling created a pathway for LSU to potentially include former NFL players on its roster. East Baton Rouge Parish Judge William Jorden delivered his decision shortly before LSU was required to submit its final 105-man roster to the SEC. Initially, LSU had opted not to list Harris, a former defensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints, and Wright, a former tight end for the Cleveland Browns, on the preliminary roster.

Tony Clayton, an attorney representing the athletes, expressed satisfaction with the judicial outcome. ‘It’s not about coach Kiffin. It’s not about LSU. It’s about treating these kids fairly,’ Clayton stated. ‘Today, justice was served. And justice was serve to the SEC. It was served like a cold cup of gumbo. And that judge forced them to eat it.’

Court Proceedings and State Support

The ruling followed an extensive hearing that lasted nearly nine hours. Several athletes testified, explaining their case for a fifth year of college eligibility, particularly those who had briefly pursued professional careers. The commissioner of the SEC argued against their eligibility, and the conference subsequently filed its federal lawsuit against LSU in Alabama, viewing it as a potential avenue to prevent the former professionals from playing.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill was present at the hearing and had submitted a brief supporting the athletes. While she did not argue in court, Murrill publicly criticized the SEC’s federal lawsuit against LSU, labeling it ‘legal garbage’ and ‘frivolous’ following the hearing.

Conclusion: Roster Finalized, SEC Membership Secured

By finalizing its 105-man roster with players other than Wright and Harris, LSU has navigated a complex legal and regulatory challenge. This decision averts the immediate threat of expulsion from the SEC, allowing the university and its football program to move forward without the cloud of conference sanctions. The resolution underscores the intricate interplay between collegiate athletics, legal challenges, and conference governance.
