Former ESPN anchor Suzy Kolber has shared candid details about her departure from the sports broadcasting giant in 2023, describing the emotional impact of her firing and a heated exchange with a network executive. Kolber, who spent 27 years with ESPN, revealed the moment she realized her tenure was over and the subsequent confrontation that left her feeling hurt and undervalued.

The Moment of Realization

Kolber, 62, joined ESPN in 1993, initially co-hosting ESPN2’s SportsNight. She went on to become a prominent figure, anchoring SportsCenter and reporting for College GameDay. Her long career at the network came to an abrupt end in 2023 when she was among approximately 20 on-air personalities, including notable names like Jalen Rose and Steve Young, who were let go as part of significant layoffs.

Speaking on the podcast “Sports Media with Richard Deitsch,” Kolber recounted the unsettling conversation with ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro. “He [Jimmy Pitaro] said, ‘Suzy there’s a whiteboard and your name’s on it. I don’t really know for sure right now but your name is on it,'” she recalled. This vague but ominous statement signaled that her job was in jeopardy. Later, a conversation with another network executive offered little reassurance, deepening her anxiety about her future with the company.

The emotional weight of the situation became clear as she sat with her daughter. “I remember that day sitting next to my daughter in the kitchen. For years I’ve said ‘You never know.’ And I sat down next to her and I cried. And I said, ‘I think this is really happening,'” Kolber shared, detailing the profound sadness and fear that accompanied the realization of her impending departure.

Confrontation Over Severance Terms

The situation escalated when ESPN executive Norby Williamson contacted Kolber to discuss the specifics of her exit. While Kolber stated she was mentally prepared and initially calm, the conversation took a sharp turn when she was informed about restrictions regarding public statements about the company. She was told that she could not make “anything disparaging about the company,” or risk forfeiting the final year of her contract.

This directive triggered a strong reaction from Kolber. “I have never said one negative thing about this company. Do you think I’m going to start now?” she retorted, expressing her frustration at the implication. She felt it was unfair to impose such a gag order after her extensive service.

Adding to her distress, Kolber claimed that Williamson indicated ESPN had no intention of publicly acknowledging her departure or her 27 years of service. “I’m a human, it just, that hurt. Why not?” she questioned. “I just thought after 27 years of, I was the first person hired for the launch of ESPN 2. I was the first person assigned to the X Games. I went and shot the marketing tape for it. ‘Monday Night Football’s’ move to ESPN, I was part of some pretty big franchises. You’re not going to say a word? Not thanks for 27 years, just acknowledge it? I didn’t understand that.” The lack of even a simple acknowledgment felt like a profound disrespect after dedicating nearly three decades to the network and being involved in some of its most significant milestones.

Broader Layoffs and Industry Changes

Kolber’s experience is part of a larger trend of significant workforce reductions at ESPN in recent years. These layoffs have impacted numerous long-standing employees and prominent personalities. Another notable exit was that of former NFL star Ryan Clark, who infamously learned of his termination while still on air.

Despite the difficult circumstances of his departure, Clark has since found new opportunities. His popular podcast, “The Pivot,” which he co-hosts with Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor, has secured a multi-year deal with Netflix. The partnership will bring video episodes of the show to the streaming platform starting September 8, with new episodes released Tuesdays and Fridays. The show’s existing catalog will also be available on Netflix, in addition to remaining on YouTube. Furthermore, Netflix has obtained first-look rights for all new content from Clark’s production company, Pivot25 Productions, and will produce bonus episodes.

Reflection on a Career

Suzy Kolber’s account sheds light on the often harsh realities of the media industry, where long careers can end abruptly due to corporate restructuring and financial pressures. Her willingness to share her emotional journey and the details of her confrontation provides a human perspective on the impact of such decisions. While the specifics of her exit remain tied to ESPN’s internal processes, her story highlights the importance of acknowledging an individual’s contributions, especially after decades of dedicated service. The sports media landscape continues to evolve, with talent frequently navigating new platforms and opportunities, as seen with Ryan Clark’s move to Netflix.
