DanceHouse is set to launch its 2026-27 season with a compelling new contemporary dance production, ‘ODE,’ by Compagnie Catherine Gaudet. The performance, scheduled for October 23 and 24 at the Vancouver Playhouse, promises an hour-long exploration of societal pressures and the human desire for connection.

A Blend of Performance and Ritual

Choreographed by the company’s artistic director, Catherine Gaudet, ‘ODE’ is described as a hybrid experience, merging elements of a pop-rock concert with the solemnity of a ritualistic ceremony. The work delves into the concept of ‘industrial happiness’ – the relentless pressure to maintain positivity – and examines its impact on group conformity and the potential for cultural disintegration. Despite the critique, the production ultimately uncovers a fragile sense of hope amidst the weight of collective pretense.

Jim Smith, artistic and executive director of DanceHouse, shared his perspective on the piece: “‘ODE’ begins with something wonderfully simple — a group of people coming together around the idea of love — and gradually transforms into something exhilarating, strange and unsettling.” He further elaborated on the performance’s impact, noting the extraordinary precision and endurance of the eleven dancers. “I found myself transported somewhere between a dance work, a rock concert and a ritual. What stays with me long after is the tension between the desire to belong and the cost of surrendering yourself to the group.”

Critique of Modern Society

Following Gaudet’s previous successful presentation of ‘Les jolies choses’ (The Pretty Things) in 2024, ‘ODE’ directly confronts the pervasive pressures within contemporary capitalistic society to uphold relentless positivity. The choreography draws inspiration from the language of therapy, self-help literature, and motivational TED talks, reflecting a cultural obsession with self-optimization and outward happiness.

The dancers’ movements are characterized by striking synchronicity, often performing in lockstep formations and chanting the word “love” in unison. These precise, almost aerobic-like movements, combined with ritualistic gestures such as reaching and swaying, create a visual paradox. While appearing harmonious and spiritual on the surface, Gaudet uses this engineered cohesion to expose a more unsettling reality. As noted in a review from BroadwayWorld Montreal, “the innocence of the initial tableau unfolds into an electrifying and hallucinogenic universe.”

Disintegration and Emerging Hope

The meticulously crafted unity of the performers eventually begins to fracture. The narrative arc of ‘ODE’ depicts the breakdown of this forced harmony, with cracked voices, faltering bodies, and ragged chanting signaling the immense toll of obedience and adherence to orthodoxy. The exhaustion stemming from such demanding conformity becomes palpable.

However, it is precisely within this disintegration that ‘ODE’ finds its glimmer of hope. The production suggests that from the collapse of artificial cohesion, a new path forward, however uncertain, may emerge. This exploration of psychological depth and social commentary is a hallmark of Gaudet’s work.

Catherine Gaudet’s Distinctive Style

Catherine Gaudet, the recipient of the 2022 Grand Prix de la danse de Montréal, has cultivated a reputation for a strong and distinctive choreographic voice. Her work frequently delves into themes of the psyche, identity, and the physical body, offering sharp commentary on social conventions. Gaudet is known for her ability to use subtle micro-movements and rhythmic expressions to reveal deeply held emotions and sensations that individuals often attempt to conceal.

Performance Details and Engagement

‘ODE’ premiered to a sold-out audience at Montreal’s Festival TransAmériques in 2024 and will now make its western Canadian debut. The tour includes a stop in Calgary on October 21, followed by the Vancouver performances on October 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. at the Vancouver Playhouse.

DanceHouse is enhancing the audience experience with pre-show talks scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on both evenings of the performance. Additionally, a post-show reception will be held in the salon following the performance on Friday, October 23, offering an opportunity for further engagement with the artistic experience.
