Toys “R” Us is embarking on its most significant retail expansion in nearly a decade, with plans to open 120 new brick-and-mortar stores across the United States. This move marks a notable resurgence for the beloved toy retailer, which aims to capitalize on a surprising surge in demand, particularly from adult consumers. The company announced on Thursday that new one-year leases have been secured for numerous locations, signaling a robust comeback strategy.
Surging Toy Sales Driven by Adult Consumers
The expansion is fueled by a notable increase in toy sales, which have experienced their most substantial growth since 2020, according to consumer data tracker Circana. In the first half of 2026, toy sales climbed by an impressive 17 percent, marking the strongest performance for the first six months of a year in six years. A significant driver of this growth is the phenomenon of “kidults” – adult consumers who are actively purchasing toys, particularly trading cards and collectibles. Circana data indicates that adults now account for a substantial 55% of all toy sales, underscoring a shift in the market demographic.
New Stores and Product Offerings
The upcoming Toys “R” Us stores, ranging from 3,500 to 7,500 square feet, will feature a wide array of popular brands, including LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Pokémon, and KPop Demon Hunters. To enhance the shopping experience, some locations will also incorporate unique amenities such as on-site cafes and sweet shops. This strategy aims to create more than just a retail space, but a destination for families and collectors alike.
Currently, approximately 40 Toys “R” Us stores are operational across the U.S. These include a 20,000-square-foot flagship store in New Jersey and another prominent location in Minnesota. The current expansion drive, initiated last month, is being managed by Go! Retail Group, an entity that specializes in pop-up shops and began quietly launching Toys “R” Us outlets last year. The company anticipates the total number of stores to reach 160 in the coming weeks as the rollout continues.
A Comeback Story in the Retail Landscape
This ambitious expansion comes at a time when many traditional brick-and-mortar retailers are facing challenges and closures. The revival of Toys “R” Us is particularly striking given its history. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2017, leading to the closure of all 750 of its U.S. stores. This collapse significantly impacted the toy industry, which had relied on the retailer for driving sales and introducing new products. Following its closure, major retailers like Walmart, Amazon, and Target largely absorbed the market share previously held by Toys “R” Us.
However, the toy industry’s resilience is evident. Jamie Uitdenhowen, a former veteran of Toys “R” Us and now executive vice president at WHP Global, expressed optimism about the sector’s strength. “The toy industry is incredibly strong,” Uitdenhowen stated, suggesting that the conditions are favorable for a sustained revival of the Toys “R” Us brand.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Toys “R” Us
The strategic decision to reopen stores and focus on the adult collector market reflects a keen understanding of current consumer trends. By offering a curated selection of popular brands and incorporating experiential elements like cafes, Toys “R” Us is positioning itself to appeal to both nostalgic adults and new generations of shoppers. While the current number of stores is a fraction of its former peak, this expansion represents a significant step towards reclaiming its position in the retail landscape. The success of this initiative could signal a broader trend of revitalization for iconic retail brands that adapt to evolving consumer behaviors and market dynamics.
The renewed focus on physical retail spaces, coupled with the strong performance of the toy market, suggests a promising future for Toys “R” Us. The company’s ability to leverage nostalgia while catering to contemporary purchasing habits, particularly among the growing “kidult” demographic, will be key to its long-term success. This expansion is not just about reopening stores; it’s about redefining the Toys “R” Us experience for a new era of retail.
