Curtis Jones Unlikely to Leave Anfield Before Deadline

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones appears set to remain at the club before the transfer window closes on Monday night. Recent links to a potential move to Inter Milan have faded, primarily due to complications surrounding his contract, which expires at the end of next season.

Initial Talks with Inter Milan

Earlier discussions between Inter Milan and Liverpool explored a loan deal for Jones that included an option to buy. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted that negotiations were ongoing, tied to Inter’s potential sale of Davide Frattesi to Nottingham Forest.

Romano stated: “Inter are in direct club-to-club talks with Liverpool for Curtis Jones on a loan deal with a buy option clause. Negotiations ongoing but linked to Davide Frattesi’s exit with Nottingham Forest waiting for an answer. Inter and Liverpool, discussing today.”

Deal Now Blocked by Contract Issues

However, Liverpool has blocked the transfer. Romano explained on his YouTube channel that the club refuses to approve the move, citing Jones’ contract status with only one year remaining.

“Important to say for Curtis Jones, Liverpool are not giving the green light to Inter. So at the moment the deal remains completely blocked, also because of the renewal, because Liverpool are not going to let Curtis Jones leave on loan with buy option with only one year left on his contract,” Romano said. “At the moment there is no agreement to extend his contract, so let’s see what’s going to happen and if they can agree on a new deal or not. But everything’s blocked for Curtis Jones.”

Strategic Decision Protects Liverpool’s Interests

Liverpool’s stance makes sense as Jones enters the final year of his deal this summer. Allowing a loan with a buy option could undervalue him, forcing the club to accept a reduced fee below his market worth. There’s also the risk of Jones returning after the loan without Inter triggering the option, only for them to pursue him for free in a year.

This approach safeguards the club’s financial position amid ongoing contract talks.

Uncertain Future for Jones at Anfield

Despite his roots in Liverpool’s academy, Jones faces an unclear path forward. Under manager Arne Slot, he has started just 10 of 24 Premier League matches this season and lacks a guaranteed spot in the lineup. With no progress on a contract extension, his long-term role at the club remains in question, potentially signaling challenges ahead as the January window approaches.
