Free on Channel 4: ‘The Girl from Plainville’ True Crime Drama
A compelling drama series drawn from a heartbreaking real-life tragedy is now streaming for free on Channel 4. ‘The Girl from Plainville’ explores the story of Michelle Carter and the devastating suicide of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III. Elle Fanning and Colton Ryan star in the lead roles in this eight-episode series that delves into the events leading to Conrad’s death and the ensuing high-profile trial.
The Real-Life Case
The series is based on actual events that unfolded in 2014. Conrad Roy III, an 18-year-old struggling with anxiety and depression, took his own life by filling his vehicle with carbon monoxide in July 2014. Earlier that November, he had attempted suicide by ingesting a bottle of Tylenol. Michelle Carter, who met Conrad during a 2012 vacation in Florida, maintained a long-distance relationship with him mostly through text messages.
Investigations uncovered that Carter, who had faced her own mental health challenges, sent numerous texts urging Conrad to follow through on his suicidal thoughts. On the day of his death, she messaged him: “You keep pushing it off and say you’ll do it but you never do. It’s always gonna be that way if you don’t take action.” Twelve hours later, after learning of his death, she texted: “Conrad I love you so much please tell me this is a joke. I’m so sorry I didn’t think you were being serious. I need you please answer me.”
In February 2015, Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter. During her 2017 trial, she was convicted and sentenced to two and a half years in prison but served only 11 months due to good behavior. The case has also inspired other works, including a 2019 HBO documentary titled ‘I Love You, Now Die’ and a 2018 film called ‘Conrad & Michelle: If Words Could Kill’.
