New Arrest Rocks Norwegian Royal Family Ahead of Scheduled Trial
Marius Borg Høiby, stepson of Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon, was detained by Oslo police Sunday evening on multiple new charges including assault, knife-related threats, and violation of a restraining order. This arrest occurs just two days before the commencement of his scheduled six-week trial involving 38 prior criminal charges.
Escalating Legal Challenges
Authorities confirmed the 27-year-old now faces additional allegations beyond the existing charges of rape, domestic abuse, death threats, violence against officials, and drug trafficking. Prosecutors have requested four weeks’ detention to prevent potential reoffending during ongoing proceedings.
The defendant reportedly plans to plead guilty to minor charges while contesting serious allegations including four counts of sexual assault, which carry maximum sentences of ten years imprisonment. Oslo police attorney Andreas Kruszewski stated: “We can confirm the arrest on charges of assault, knife threats, and restraining order violations.”
Royal Family Responds to Crisis
In an official statement, Crown Prince Haakon emphasized that while Høiby remains “an important family member,” he holds no royal position and bears equal legal responsibilities as any Norwegian citizen. The palace confirmed neither Haakon nor Crown Princess Mette-Marit will attend court proceedings.
“Our thoughts are with all affected by this difficult situation,” the heir apparent stated. “We trust Norway’s judicial system to conduct proceedings properly and justly.”
Separate Controversy Involving Epstein Links
This development coincides with renewed scrutiny of Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s past communications with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Newly released documents show email exchanges between the royal and Epstein discussing social engagements.
In a recent interview with Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Mette-Marit expressed regret about the association: “I deeply regret not investigating Epstein’s background sooner. Showing poor judgment in maintaining contact remains personally embarrassing.”
One disclosed 2012 email exchange featured Epstein inquiring about a European royal wedding, to which the Crown Princess replied: “Boring wedding. Was like some kind of old movie.”
