Creating a bootable USB installer for macOS Golden Gate can be a valuable tool for system administrators and Mac enthusiasts alike. This process allows for streamlined installations across multiple machines and can significantly speed up the setup on Macs with slower internet connections. While macOS Golden Gate can be installed directly through the Software Update mechanism, a USB installer offers a more versatile and often quicker alternative, especially for those managing several Macs or performing clean installations.

Why Create a macOS Golden Gate USB Installer?

The primary advantage of a bootable USB installer is its utility in deploying macOS Golden Gate to numerous Macs efficiently. Instead of downloading the full installer for each machine, which can consume considerable bandwidth and time, a single USB drive can serve as the source for multiple installations. This is particularly beneficial in educational settings, businesses, or for individuals who frequently set up new Macs. Furthermore, for users with limited or slow internet access, a USB installer bypasses the need for a lengthy download during the installation process itself, making the overall upgrade or fresh install much faster.

What You’ll Need

To embark on creating your macOS Golden Gate USB installer, you will require the following:

  • A USB flash drive with a minimum of 16GB of storage. While most USB drives will function, including portable SSDs, a standard flash drive is commonly used. The drive should be blank, as its contents will be completely erased during the process.
  • Access to a Mac running a compatible version of macOS that can download and prepare the macOS Golden Gate installer.
  • An internet connection to download the macOS Golden Gate installer files.

Downloading the macOS Golden Gate Installer

The macOS Golden Gate installer can be obtained through Apple’s official channels. A convenient method for advanced users involves using the Terminal application. This approach allows for direct downloading of the full installer package.

Steps to Download via Terminal:

  1. Open Terminal: Launch the Terminal application, typically found in the Utilities folder within your Applications directory.
  2. List Available Installers: To see which full installers are available for download, enter the following command and press Return: softwareupdate --list-full-installers
  3. Enable Beta Updates (if applicable): If you are attempting to download a beta version of macOS Golden Gate, you must first enable beta updates. Navigate to System Settings > General > Software Update and toggle on the option for beta updates.
  4. Fetch the Desired Installer: Once you have identified the specific version number from the list (e.g., 27.0 for a particular release), use the following command, replacing the version number with your target. For beta versions, the name will reflect this. Press Return after entering the command: softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version [version_number]

Upon successful execution, the installer package, named “Install macOS Golden Gate” (or “Install macOS Golden Gate Beta”), will be downloaded and saved to your Mac’s Applications folder.

Preparing the USB Drive

Before you can create the bootable installer, the USB drive needs to be formatted correctly. It’s crucial to back up any important data from the USB drive, as the formatting process will erase all existing content.

Formatting the USB Drive:

  1. Launch Disk Utility: Open Disk Utility from the Applications > Utilities folder.
  2. Select the USB Drive: In the Disk Utility sidebar, locate and select your USB drive. Be extremely careful to choose the correct drive to avoid data loss on other storage devices.
  3. Erase the Drive: Click the “Erase” button. For the format, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Ensure the Scheme is set to GUID Partition Map if prompted. Click “Erase” to proceed. Note that APFS formatted drives are not compatible for creating macOS installers using this method.

Creating the Bootable Installer

With the macOS Golden Gate installer downloaded and the USB drive properly formatted, you can now proceed to create the bootable installer using Terminal. This process involves using a specific command that combines the installer application with the USB drive.

Steps to Create the Installer:

  1. Locate the Installer Package: Navigate to your Applications folder in Finder. Right-click (or Control-click) on the “Install macOS Golden Gate” application and select “Show Package Contents.” Open the Contents folder, then the Resources folder within it.
  2. Prepare the Terminal Command: In a new Terminal window, type the following command, followed by a space: sudo
  3. Add the createinstallmedia Tool: Drag and drop the createinstallmedia executable file from the Resources folder (found in step 1) directly into the Terminal window. This will automatically populate the path to the tool. Then, type --volume followed by a space.
  4. Specify the USB Volume: Connect your prepared USB drive to your Mac. Open Finder, navigate to Go > Go to Folder…, type /Volumes, and press Return. Locate the volume name of your USB drive (it should match the name you see in Finder). Drag and drop this USB volume directly into the Terminal window.
  5. Execute the Command: Press Return on your keyboard. You will be prompted to enter your administrator password. Type it in (characters will not appear on screen) and press Return. You may also need to confirm by typing ‘y’ and pressing Return.
  6. Wait for Completion: The Terminal will now begin the process of erasing the USB drive and copying the installer files. This can take a significant amount of time, depending on the speed of your USB drive and Mac. Do not interrupt the process.
  7. Finalize: Once the process is complete, Terminal will indicate success. You can now safely eject the USB drive.

Conclusion

You have now successfully created a bootable macOS Golden Gate USB installer. This tool is invaluable for efficiently installing or reinstalling macOS Golden Gate on multiple Macs, or for performing clean installations without relying solely on an internet connection. Keep this drive in a safe place, as it can be a lifesaver for future system management tasks.
