UK Drivers Risk £10,000 Fines and 12 Points for Illegal Tyres – 20p Test

Motoring experts warn that drivers across the UK could face fines up to £10,000 and 12 penalty points on their licences due to illegal tyre tread depth, a preventable issue governed by the Highway Code.

Legal Tread Depth Requirements

The Highway Code mandates that cars, light vans, and light trailers must maintain a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s breadth and around its entire circumference. Failing to meet this standard on all four tyres risks penalties of up to £2,500 and three points per tyre, totaling £10,000 and 12 points.

The Simple 20p Tyre Test

Drivers should perform a quick 20p coin test every two weeks or before long trips to ensure compliance. Insert a 20p coin into the tyre’s tread grooves. If the outer band on the coin remains hidden, the tyres meet the legal limit. If the band is visible, the tyres may be unsafe and need a professional mechanic’s inspection.

Tyre tread depth must exceed 1.6 mm in the middle three-quarters of the tyre to remain safe and legal.

Severe Consequences of Non-Compliance

Driving with inadequate or bald tyres poses serious risks to drivers and other road users. In an accident, illegal tyres could invalidate insurance claims, leaving drivers responsible for repair costs.

Experts recommend using a tyre tread depth gauge for precise measurements, or basic colour-coded tools for instant checks on legality.
