Early indicators suggest the Las Vegas Raiders are cooling on Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza as their long-term answer at the position. Holding the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft on April 24, the Raiders face a pivotal decision with Mendoza emerging as the consensus favorite after leading his college team to a national championship last season.

Raiders Prefer Veteran Start in 2026

Recent discussions at the NFL Combine reveal the Raiders have expressed reluctance to begin the 2026 season with a rookie quarterback under center. This stance does not rule out selecting Mendoza but signals openness to trade offers for the No. 1 pick.

The team endured a challenging 2025 campaign, finishing 3-14 in the AFC West with Geno Smith at quarterback. Smith’s tenure drew fan backlash, including a notable gesture toward jeering supporters after one loss. Despite one year remaining on his contract, new head coach Klint Kubiak—formerly the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks—may opt to retain Smith while developing a drafted rookie like Mendoza.

Minority owner Tom Brady, actively involved in the rebuild, has voiced admiration for Mendoza in prior statements.

Jets Signal Trade Interest

The New York Jets appear poised to test the waters. General Manager Darren Mougey hinted at potential pursuit during recent comments, stating, “Absolutely, we’ll talk about all those things, but I don’t think that’s happening.”

Possessing the No. 2 and No. 16 picks, the Jets share the Raiders’ urgent need for quarterback stability. Free agency offers alternatives, but trading up remains a strong option if the Raiders entertain deals. Other contenders could also enter negotiations if Las Vegas fields offers.
