In the latest Hollyoaks episode, now streaming on Channel 4, Diane Hutchinson experiences a devastating moment after a hospital visit reveals advanced ovarian cancer. The episode airs on E4 at 7pm.
Traumatic Hospital Visit
Diane Hutchinson, played by Alex Fletcher, attends an emergency appointment due to persistent abdominal pains. With her husband Tony away on a trip with his brother Dom, she faces the ordeal alone. A reminder for the urgent visit heightens her anxiety, leading to emotional scenes as she processes the doctors’ grim prognosis.
Exiting the hospital, Diane collapses into a chair, drops her handbag, and sobs uncontrollably upon learning the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes, liver, and lung lining. Treatment options remain limited, with chemotherapy offered but its effectiveness uncertain.
Storyline Details and Exit Plot
This diagnosis forms part of Alex Fletcher’s exit storyline after 16 years on the soap. Diane first shares her news with Nancy Osborne and Leela Dexter, who encourage her to inform Tony. Tony reacts with heartbreak but insists on seeking a second opinion.
As Mother’s Day nears, daughter Dee-Dee unknowingly directs jabs at her mother amid the unfolding family tension.
Awareness Through Partnership
The storyline draws guidance from Ovarian Cancer Action, highlighting that over 75% of women receive an advanced-stage diagnosis. This collaboration aims to raise awareness and prompt health prioritization.
Alex Fletcher’s Perspective
Alex Fletcher shared: “This storyline has been a completely new challenge for me and something I’ve never explored before. Unfortunately, in some way or another many of us have been touched by cancer, I know my family certainly has this past year, so the storyline can be very relatable. At times it’s been difficult to film but I’m glad that Hollyoaks are telling this story and raising awareness about ovarian cancer, with the hope that it encourages people to prioritise their health.”
Hollyoaks streams Mondays to Wednesdays from 6am on Channel 4’s platform, with TV airings at 7pm on E4.
