Falkirk Protests Mark Year Since Asylum Seeker Hotel Clashes

Falkirk saw demonstrations on Saturday, marking approximately one year since the initial clashes outside a former hotel that had been accommodating asylum seekers. The events echo the tensions that arose last summer, though the Cladhan Hotel itself is no longer used for housing asylum seekers.

Anniversary Demonstrations in Falkirk

On Saturday, the anti-immigration group Voices for Falkirk convened outside the Cladhan Hotel, a location that witnessed several confrontations in the previous year. Their gathering was held under the banner “The Right Unites.” In parallel, pro-immigration groups Falkirk For All and Stand Up To Racism organized a unity march through the town. These two opposing groups briefly converged near a bandstand but were kept apart by police presence before dispersing.

Sources indicate that the Cladhan Hotel is no longer serving as accommodation for asylum seekers. The deployment of officers aimed to prevent a recurrence of the disturbances seen in Glasgow the previous month, where anti-racism and anti-immigration protesters clashed. The Cladhan Hotel was the focal point for numerous demonstrations last summer, drawing hundreds of participants on both sides and resulting in multiple arrests. These protests have persisted over the past year, even after the asylum seekers were relocated from the hotel.

Messages of Unity and Community Building

The pro-immigration demonstration commenced at Callendar House, proceeding as a march towards the town center and attracting an estimated 200 participants. Karen Morrison, an organizer with the Unison union for the Forth Valley region, stated that the march was intended to foster community cohesion in the wake of last summer’s events. “I understand why people are angry,” Morrison commented. “But they are angry at the wrong people. Asylum seekers are not to blame for the ills of our society, social housing, jobs; we need to go back into communities to help people understand that. We want to send a message of hope, that things can get better and we don’t need to be fighting each other.”

Context of Asylum Seekers in Scotland

Official figures from the Home Office reveal that as of March 31st this year, Scotland was home to 6,587 individuals seeking asylum. The majority of these individuals, over half, are located in Glasgow.

Background to Last Year’s Tensions

The protests last year were significantly influenced by the conviction of an asylum seeker from Afghanistan for the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Falkirk. Sadeq Nikzad received a nine-year prison sentence at the High Court in Livingston in June of the previous year, following the attack that occurred in October 2023. More recently, Muhammad Sheikhi, aged 23, a former resident of the Cladhan Hotel, was sentenced to four years imprisonment for sexually assaulting two women in Falkirk in November of last year.

Anti-Immigration Stance

A contingent of anti-immigration protesters positioned themselves opposite the hotel on Saturday, displaying flags and banners. Attempts to solicit comments from individuals involved in this demonstration proved challenging. However, one protester expressed a call for the United Kingdom to withdraw from the UN convention on refugees and to implement mandatory prison sentences for those arriving via the English Channel to claim asylum. This individual also noted that the issue continues to be a source of division within communities.

Conclusion

The anniversary demonstrations in Falkirk highlight the ongoing societal debate surrounding asylum seekers and immigration. While the immediate site of past conflicts, the Cladhan Hotel, is no longer in use for asylum accommodation, the sentiments that fueled last year’s clashes and the counter-protests remain evident. Organizers on both sides continue to advocate for their respective viewpoints, with calls for community understanding and stricter immigration policies being voiced. The situation underscores the complex challenges faced in integrating asylum seekers and managing public perception and response.
