Breaking the Drought in Tennis Paradise

The Serbian star, seeded third, claims five career titles in the California desert, with his most recent triumph occurring a decade ago. He has struggled to advance past the fourth round in recent years and exited in the opening round last season. This win marks a strong response following his four-set Australian Open final loss earlier this year.

Djokovic acknowledges the difficulty of peaking early in the tournament, especially amid challenging windy conditions he describes as among the toughest on the tour.

“It was very challenging, as it has been lately for me in Indian Wells, to be honest,” the 38-year-old says post-match. “It’s kind of hard to find my A-game, particularly at the beginning of the tournament in the last seven or eight years here, so I’m just glad to overcome the challenge.”

Adapting to Majchrzak and Tough Elements

Majchrzak proves a solid opponent, possessing a complete game without overwhelming power. He fearlessly approaches the net and takes the ball early, dominating the first set. Djokovic resets in the second set, improving his feel for the ball with strong crowd support in a packed stadium.

“I knew Kamil is a very solid player,” Djokovic explains. “He played great in the first set. Right at the beginning of the second, I reset and started feeling the ball better. The crowd was amazing for a first match—it’s Tennis Paradise!”

Wind Poses Major Hurdle

Djokovic highlights multiple factors complicating his performance, including the transition from practice to matches. Gusty winds shifting directions create extra tension, particularly on his side of the court.

“The wind here is one of the toughest on the tour, just on a day like this,” he notes. “If you’re tight and not feeling the ball well, you’re in big trouble—like what happened to me in the first set over the last couple of years. But I managed to find the right game from the start of the second and never looked back. It was a tough mental and physical battle, and I’m looking forward to the next one.”
