I think all of his writing is really painfully pure and beautiful.”
Nagler first encountered Johnston’s work through Kathy McCarty’s album Dead Dog’s Eyeball: Songs of Daniel Johnston. While she noted that her rendition leans closer to McCarty’s interpretation, she has also evolved the song over time, subtly altering lyrics as she’s performed it live across the years. This continuous refinement underscores her deep connection to the song and its original artist.
