OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced last October that ChatGPT would introduce an adult mode capable of generating erotica and similar content. However, the planned December rollout has been postponed indefinitely.
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the delay, stating that engineers are focusing on higher-priority updates. These enhancements target intelligence improvements, personality adjustments, and a more proactive response style from the AI.
“We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time,” the spokesperson explained.
Details on Adult Mode
The adult mode will exclusively serve users verified as over 18 years old. Early testing revealed challenges with the age verification system, which the team continues to refine.
Broader AI Ethics Challenges
This development occurs amid ongoing debates over AI ethics at OpenAI. A recent partnership with the US military has sparked backlash due to fears of enabling mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. User data indicates a notable decline in ChatGPT usage following the announcement.
Caitlin Kalinowski, OpenAI’s head of robotics, stepped down in protest over the Pentagon agreement. This marks another instance where staff have raised concerns about the company’s safety protocols.
Given these pressures, OpenAI appears cautious about introducing features that could fuel additional ethical discussions.
No revised launch date for the adult mode has been announced. The latest update, GPT-5.4 Thinking model, launched recently and excels at handling complex tasks. Meanwhile, alternative adult-oriented AI tools remain accessible online.
