Tattoo artists are increasingly encountering clients who request designs generated by artificial intelligence, leading to concerns about impracticality, errors, and unrealistic expectations. While AI can be a tool for creativity, its application in tattoo design presents unique challenges that artists say customers often overlook.
The Rise of AI-Generated Tattoo Requests
A growing number of individuals are turning to AI platforms to create tattoo designs before consulting with professional artists. This trend, while novel, is causing friction within the tattoo industry. Tattoo artist Courtnii Shaw, based in Adelaide, reports that approximately one in four inquiries her studio receives now includes AI-generated imagery. She notes that sometimes the very nature of the inquiry seems to originate from AI, with clients feeding prompts into systems like ChatGPT and then presenting the output as their desired tattoo.
“It’s really, really common now. People seem to really trust what AI gives them and tells them, so I find that it’s just setting some unrealistic expectations,” Shaw stated. This reliance on AI-generated visuals can lead to a disconnect between a client’s vision and what is technically feasible and aesthetically sound as a permanent body modification.
At another studio, Phil Pagdin’s, the prevalence of AI-influenced requests is even higher, with closer to three out of every four inquiries featuring such designs. Pagdin highlighted that AI-generated imagery often appears overly detailed and repetitive, frequently containing errors that clients may not initially recognize. “There’s some obvious ones where it’ll spell something wrong,” he explained. “When we talk to the client about their design, we’re like, ‘Oh, what is this part here?’ and they don’t even know. You’re going to come up with a weird tattoo that you can’t really read.””
Challenges for Artists and Clients
Brenton Eldridge, vice president of the Professional Tattooing Association of Australia, pointed out the pressure this trend places on younger artists. Clients often present AI designs expecting immediate quotes, without fully grasping that these digital creations can take mere minutes to generate, whereas a professional tattoo can require many hours of skilled work. “A person will come to the studio, present that [AI image] and want a quote on it… they’re not really in a good mindset to be told it’s not practical, or it’s going to take a hundred hours when AI is generated in one minute,” Eldridge said. “It’s creating a bit of conflict.”
The Practicality Gap: AI vs. Skin
Eldridge emphasized that while AI can be a valuable tool for artists during the initial design phase, it has significant limitations when translating to skin. “AI itself can be a fantastic tool for artists to use to prototype things, look at different effects, and quickly throw something together,” he acknowledged. However, he added, “But in the way of a tattoo client, it’s very difficult because clients are not aware of what can be done in the skin, how the designs will heal over time and grow and colour change. AI cannot take that into account.”
Tattoo artist and studio owner Paul Briske echoed these concerns, stressing the importance of considering the placement and scale of a tattoo. These are crucial factors that AI cannot adequately address. “Tattoos have to be done at a certain size for the details to hold over time,” Briske explained. “There are tiny, intricate little details that people want to see on a hand or a leg, and they just cannot physically be done to that level.” The longevity and appearance of a tattoo are heavily influenced by how the ink interacts with the skin over years, a dynamic AI cannot simulate.
Embracing Skill and Collaboration
Artists are urging the public to reconsider their reliance on AI for tattoo concepts and to instead embrace the expertise of human artists. Briske expressed disappointment that technology, which was intended to free up time for creative pursuits, is now generating the art itself. “The biggest shame out of all of this computer stuff, it was supposed to take away all the menial jobs so that we had time to enjoy art and express ourselves,” he lamented. “Unfortunately, it’s done the opposite and it’s doing the art for us.”
The consensus among tattoo professionals is a call for clients to slow down and engage in the collaborative process that has long defined the art of tattooing. Shaw acknowledged the appeal of instantly visualizing a tattoo idea but highlighted the intrinsic value of the artist’s role in creation. “We understand that being able to visualise your tattoo idea on your own and having it immediately available feels like a really cool thing,” she said. “But it is also the best part of our job, which is creating the design.”
Ultimately, tattoo artists advocate for a return to trusting their skills and experience to produce unique, lasting artwork. They encourage clients to view the design process as a partnership, one where the artist’s knowledge ensures a tattoo that is not only visually striking but also practical, durable, and meaningful for a lifetime.
