Pauline Hanson’s Migration Vision: Skilled Workers Over Uber Drivers
SHARE

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has outlined her vision for Australia’s migration policy, emphasizing a strong preference for skilled professionals over those in lower-skilled service roles if her party were to form government. Hanson specifically stated that Australia does not require additional migrants to fill positions like Uber drivers, nail technicians, or dog walkers, describing the current system as an “absolute scam” that brings in individuals who do not meet the nation’s perceived needs.

Proposed Migration Cap and Focus on Critical Skills

In an interview, Hanson called for a significant reduction in Australia’s annual permanent migration intake, proposing a cap of 130,000 people. This figure represents a notable decrease from the federal government’s current target. She argued that high migration levels are placing an unsustainable strain on Australia’s infrastructure and housing, leading to widespread social issues.

“We’ve allowed these people in,” Hanson remarked, questioning the rationale behind admitting large numbers of migrants whose skills may not align with Australia’s economic priorities. “Why bring in so many people that don’t fit the needs that we want in Australia? We don’t need any more Uber drivers, nail technicians, dog walkers. These people gone. Stop all that.”

When questioned about adjustments to the skilled migration program, Hanson stressed the critical importance of the ‘skills list’ for visa approvals. She believes the focus should be on attracting individuals whose expertise will directly benefit the country. “The skills list. Very, very important,” she stated. “Doctors, nurses, engineers – those people that are going to benefit our country.”

Addressing Housing and Infrastructure Pressures

Hanson articulated that a slowdown in migration growth is essential to alleviate pressure on housing and infrastructure. She described the current situation as one where the nation is “overwhelmed” and in need of a “breather.” While advocating for a lower cap, she suggested that the figure should be subject to annual review rather than being a permanent fixture.

The current federal government’s Migration Program, set for 2026-27, aims for 185,000 places, with a substantial majority designated for skilled migrants. Approximately 71 percent of these places, equating to 132,240 individuals, are allocated to skilled workers, including those sponsored by employers and independent skilled visa holders. Family visas account for another significant portion, with 52,460 places, and a small number are reserved for special eligibility categories.

Hanson’s policy proposal contrasts with the current allocation, suggesting a more targeted approach towards critical industries. She contended that the existing system admits too few individuals with the necessary skills to effectively address labor shortages in vital sectors.

Temporary Visas and Humanitarian Concerns

Despite her call for reduced permanent migration, Hanson indicated that temporary visa programs, such as those for backpackers and other short-term workers, would likely continue under her leadership. “We would still allow for backpackers, those workers coming to Australia, those ones that will be here for a short period of time,” she confirmed.

The One Nation leader drew a direct line between her migration policy and Australia’s escalating housing crisis. She shared personal observations of families struggling with homelessness, citing instances of people living in cars and tents for extended periods. Hanson expressed deep concern over the plight of these families, particularly children, emphasizing that such conditions are unacceptable in a prosperous nation.

“I’ve got people just down the road from me. I pulled up the other day, homeless, three years living in their cars,” Hanson recounted. “I went to a park and I saw homeless families. Families. It is a crying shame in a perceived country like us that’s supposed to be wealthy that we have families living in tents, and especially children. Children should not be living like this.”

Conclusion: A Shift in Migration Priorities

Pauline Hanson’s proposed immigration policy signals a significant shift in priorities, advocating for a more selective approach that favors highly skilled professionals essential for national development. By calling for a reduced migration cap and a stronger emphasis on critical occupations like doctors, nurses, and engineers, she aims to address perceived strains on Australian society and infrastructure, while also highlighting the urgent need to tackle the housing crisis and support vulnerable citizens.
