Alan Titchmarsh, the renowned 76-year-old gardening expert and prolific author, embarks on a fresh career venture with his 13th fiction book—a murder mystery set for release next year. The idea sparked during a transatlantic cruise aboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2.
Inspiration from a Literary Cruise
Titchmarsh recalls a literature festival on the ship with around 30 writers and journalists. One author challenged him: “Alan, you’ve never written crime, come on, it’s time you did.” That comment planted the seed for the novel.
Apprehensions and Enjoyment
While enthusiastic, Titchmarsh acknowledges potential flaws. “I have no doubt holes will be picked in my plot, but I have thoroughly enjoyed writing it,” he states. “The characters are interesting and there’s a bit of humour. I never write things terribly, terribly serious.”
Scaling Back for Balance
This project follows Titchmarsh’s decision to reduce his workload for better family time. He now skips Fridays and some Mondays from his schedule.
Thriving YouTube Channel
As part of this change, Titchmarsh launched a YouTube channel offering gardening tips, demonstrations, and advice from his home. “It’s had millions of views,” he notes. “It’s amazing. I think YouTube’s great strength is that it’s an intimate medium. One person has got you in their hand rather than a screen with a room and a country full of people watching it.”
In his welcome message, Titchmarsh invites viewers: “I’ve been a gardener for over 60 years and I can safely say that gardening is one of life’s greatest joys, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Whether you have green fingers or just starting out with your very first window box, join me in my garden for practical tips, step-by-step guides, and plenty of friendly advice to help you make the most of your garden—large or small. So pop the kettle on, pull up a chair (or a trowel!), and join me each week as we celebrate the wonderful world of gardening together.”
Spring Gardening Advice
A recent episode focuses on spring tasks, including treating lawns damaged by winter moss. Titchmarsh recommends pricking out seedlings, sowing vegetable seeds, planting hardy perennials, and adding cherry trees.
Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh airs Sundays at 9:30 a.m. on ITV and ITVX.
