Supermarkets Urged to Provide Free Period Products

Aldi UK, alongside Tina Leslie MBE, founder of Freedom4Girls, has penned a joint letter to the chief executives of prominent UK supermarket chains. The letter urges these retailers to implement a policy of making free period products available in customer toilets, where feasible. This call to action is bolstered by recent research commissioned by Aldi, which indicates significant public support for such a measure.

The research revealed that a substantial 67% of shoppers believe supermarkets ought to offer free period products in their restrooms. Furthermore, the same percentage of respondents indicated that they would hold a more favorable opinion of a supermarket that provided this service. Adding to this sentiment, three-quarters (75%) of shoppers expressed the view that period products should be regarded as fundamental bathroom essentials, akin to toilet paper and soap.

A significant majority, 66%, also acknowledged the crucial role supermarkets can play in supporting individuals who face challenges in accessing or affording these necessary items. This underscores a growing public expectation for retailers to contribute to social well-being beyond their commercial operations.

Aldi’s Pioneering Role and Impact

Aldi has positioned itself as a leader in this movement, having been the first UK supermarket to introduce free period products across all its customer and colleague toilets. Since launching this program in March 2025, the company reports having distributed one million free period products through its store facilities. This effort is designed to enhance the accessibility of everyday essentials like tampons and pads for anyone in need.

The research findings further illuminate the multifaceted benefits of providing free period products in public restrooms. Key advantages identified by shoppers include:

  • Assistance for Unexpected Periods: 69% of shoppers believe the provision would help individuals who experience a sudden period while away from home.
  • Support for Affordability Issues: 58% noted that it would assist those who are unable to afford products when required.
  • Reduction of Embarrassment: 48% suggested it would lessen the discomfort associated with asking for or purchasing period products.

When shoppers were asked about the most appropriate locations for free period products, supermarket customer toilets emerged as the top choice for 56% of respondents. This preference placed them ahead of other public venues such as shopping centres, transport hubs, and leisure centres. Additionally, 62% of shoppers indicated they would expect large supermarkets to offer these products in their restrooms, with just over half stating they would be more inclined to shop at a retailer that made them freely available.

Personal Experiences and Alternatives

The survey also highlighted personal experiences among those who menstruate. A notable 53% reported having been caught unprepared without period products while shopping or out and about. In such situations, a vast majority, 93%, resorted to using toilet paper, tissues, or other makeshift alternatives due to the unavailability of proper products.

Statements from Campaign Leaders

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, emphasized the fundamental nature of menstrual product access. “Access to period products should be a basic right, not a privilege,” Ashfield stated. “That is why we made free period products available in our store toilets for customers and colleagues, with no questions asked.” She added, “The latest research shows shoppers support supermarkets making period products more accessible. Together with Freedom4Girls, we’ve written to the chief executives of other major UK supermarkets, encouraging them to consider introducing free period products where facilities allow.” Ashfield concluded, “This is a simple, practical step that could make a real difference to customers and colleagues across the country. These products are essential, and we believe making them freely available is the right thing to do.”

Tina Leslie MBE, founder of Freedom4Girls, a charity focused on menstrual equity and combating period poverty, expressed her encouragement. “Period poverty remains a huge issue in the UK, and we’re encouraged to see Aldi continuing to use its platform to push for wider change,” Leslie commented. “Providing free period products in supermarket toilets is a practical way to help people access what they need discreetly and with dignity. We would welcome more retailers taking similar action to help tackle stigma, affordability and access.”

Community Support and Donations

Beyond in-store provisions, Aldi also facilitates customer contributions to address period poverty. Shoppers can donate period products through dedicated in-store donation points. These collected items are then distributed to food banks and charitable organizations via Aldi’s community partner, Neighbourly, further extending the supermarket’s commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals and communities.

The campaign by Aldi and Freedom4Girls highlights a growing awareness of period poverty and the role businesses can play in alleviating its impact. By advocating for the widespread adoption of free period products in supermarkets, the initiative seeks to normalize conversations around menstruation and ensure that essential hygiene needs are met with dignity and ease for all.
