Arteta Rejects Fatigue as Arsenal Targets Sporting Win

Mikel Arteta insists fatigue provides no justification for Arsenal’s recent setbacks, pushing his players to rally and secure victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League quarter-final second leg. Arsenal holds a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Lisbon and hosts the decisive match on Wednesday, aiming for back-to-back semi-final berths.

Recent Setbacks Jeopardize Title Hopes

Arsenal enters the clash amid introspection after dropping three of their last four matches across competitions. The slump eliminated them from two trophies: Manchester City claimed a 2-0 League Cup final win, while second-division Southampton ousted them in the FA Cup quarter-finals. A stunning 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth on Saturday further threatens their Premier League title bid after 22 years, leaving them six points clear of City, who hold a game in hand and face Arsenal at the Etihad on Sunday.

Selection Dilemma Looms Large

The high-stakes weekend fixture forces Arteta into a tough choice for the Sporting encounter. He must decide whether to deploy his top squad to regain momentum against the Portuguese champions or rotate players to preserve energy for City, relying on squad depth. This marks Arsenal’s 54th game this season amid a grueling schedule and persistent injuries, with Martin Odegaard, Bayo Saka, and Jurrien Timber sidelined. Players appeared drained against Bournemouth.

Arteta Demands Resilience

Arteta dismissed tiredness as a factor, stating: “I don’t want to pull on those excuses because we’ve been playing so many games, every three days, and we’re going to have to continue to do that. That’s the context and that’s the scenario, and we have to embrace it and especially enjoy the opportunity. That’s one of the things that I didn’t see from the team, that level of enjoyment in certain moments and the fight that we have to have to really change the course of the game when it gets difficult. We’re going to have different contexts from here to June, and we need to be able to adapt and resolve all of them, if we want to achieve what we want to achieve.”

Gyokeres Steps Up

Viktor Gyokeres earned praise in the Bournemouth defeat, converting a first-half penalty to reach 18 goals this season despite a sluggish start. The Swedish forward showed limited impact on his return to former club Sporting in the first leg. Arteta seeks to harness his physicality and finishing to propel Arsenal toward their first Champions League triumph. Gyokeres echoed the call to action: “We have a lot of important games ahead, and we need to embrace it and to enjoy playing those games. It’s a great game to have in a few days, so we just need to recover now, leave this behind and make a very good performance on Wednesday.”
