Marco Silva Poised for Benfica Move, Fulham Contract Talks Stalled
Fulham manager Marco Silva is reportedly close to an agreement that would see him take the helm at Portuguese giants Benfica. The 48-year-old has yet to accept a contract renewal offer from Fulham, with his current deal at Craven Cottage set to expire this month.
Sources indicate that negotiations between Silva and Benfica have advanced significantly, bringing an agreement within reach. Benfica is actively seeking a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who has departed the club to take on a new role as head coach for Real Madrid. This move by Mourinho is pending the outcome of Real Madrid’s presidential elections scheduled for Sunday.
Mourinho’s Benfica Tenure and Silva’s Fulham Record
Mourinho, 63, had a second stint at Benfica beginning in September, guiding the team to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga without suffering a single league defeat. Meanwhile, Fulham concluded their past Premier League season in 11th place, accumulating 52 points, the same total as Chelsea.
Prior to Xabi Alonso’s appointment, Silva was considered a candidate to succeed Liam Rosenior at Chelsea. This potential move to Benfica follows a five-year tenure at Fulham.
Silva’s Impact at Fulham
Silva joined Fulham in July 2021, having previously managed Everton. In his inaugural season with the Cottagers, he successfully guided the team back to the Premier League after their relegation to the Championship the year prior. Should Silva depart, Fulham would become the fifth Premier League club in the market for a new manager shortly after the conclusion of the current campaign.
