Major Restructuring Announced at Broadcaster
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is initiating a significant cost-cutting initiative that will result in the elimination of approximately 550 positions across its news, television, and radio departments. This widespread restructuring also includes plans to discontinue certain programs and reduce content budgets by £80 million.
Matt Brittin, the newly appointed Director General, communicated these sweeping changes to staff via an internal email. The planned redundancies represent more than a quarter of the corporation’s projected 1,800 to 2,000 job losses over the next three years, with a particular focus on editorial and broadcasting teams.
Financial Targets and Operational Overhaul
These measures are part of a broader strategy to achieve savings of £500 million over the coming two years. In addition to the staff reductions, around 700 corporate roles are also slated for elimination as the organization undergoes a substantial overhaul. The BBC has indicated it will be reviewing its portfolio of television channels and radio networks, acknowledging a significant shift in audience consumption towards online platforms.
Specific details regarding which programs or services may be affected have not yet been disclosed. In his message, Director General Brittin stressed the challenging nature of the decisions ahead.
Director General’s Message to Staff
“The scale of savings requires tough choices, careful work, and won’t all be ready at once,” Brittin stated. “We are committed to letting you know as soon as we have plans in your area. All divisions will be making significant savings.”
He added, “We live in very uncertain times. Our audiences rely on us every day to keep them informed, entertained, and equipped to make sense of the world. Making savings while fulfilling our mission means a doubly difficult time for everyone. Please do speak to your leaders and use the support that’s available. In the meantime, thank you for all you are doing.”
Savings Breakdown and Future Plans
The broadcaster anticipates that cuts within its news, television, and radio operations will contribute approximately £160 million towards its overall savings target. Brittin also announced plans to reduce the number of senior leadership positions by at least 10 percent, aiming to create a more streamlined and agile organization.
Further details regarding the restructuring are expected to be released in the coming months. These changes follow Brittin’s appointment as Director General in May, succeeding Tim Davie, who departed in November 2025.

The announced savings are projected to deliver £160 million of the £500 million goal, contributing to an overall headcount reduction of 1,800 to 2,000 and a 10% cost reduction over the next three years.
