Martinez Under Fire for Ronaldo’s Full 90 Minutes in Draw

Questions are mounting over Roberto Martinez’s management of Cristiano Ronaldo following Portugal’s World Cup opener, which ended in a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. The team conceded an equalizer in first-half stoppage time after an early lead from Joao Neves. Ronaldo played the entire match but failed to record a goal, assist, or shot on target.

The disappointing result has been overshadowed by debate surrounding Martinez’s decision to keep Ronaldo on the field as the game slipped away from Portugal. Analysts and former players are voicing strong opinions on the matter.

Criticism Mounts Over Tactical Decisions

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton did not mince words in his assessment of Martinez’s approach. “That’s embarrassing from Martinez,” Sutton stated. “He’s scared to take him off. He’s not the manager.” Sutton argued that while Ronaldo might still score a winner, the game had clearly moved past him in this instance.

The discussion extends beyond a single missed opportunity. At 41, Ronaldo remains a significant figure within the Portuguese squad, a status that some suggest may complicate tactical decisions for the manager.

Ronaldo’s Influence on Portugal’s Attack

Wider punditry has focused on how younger Portuguese attackers appeared to adjust their play around Ronaldo’s presence. Wayne Rooney, Gael Clichy, and Olivier Giroud, among others, observed that players like Francisco Conceicao seemed better positioned to take shots themselves rather than attempting to set up Ronaldo.

Thierry Henry echoed this sentiment, noting that Ronaldo’s runs sometimes obstructed passing lanes to teammates like Bruno Fernandes, who had advantageous positions near the penalty spot. Henry emphasized the need for Portugal to prioritize the most effective scoring option on any given play.

Clichy also posited that Ronaldo’s superstar status might unconsciously influence teammates, leading them to prioritize passing to the most prominent player rather than taking decisive action themselves.

A Difficult Decision for Martinez

While Martinez has previously lauded his captain’s example and Ronaldo has a history of delivering crucial moments for Portugal, this match has provided critics with new points of contention. Ronaldo’s continued presence on the field coincided with Portugal dropping valuable points, prompting renewed scrutiny of Martinez’s management and the uncomfortable questions surrounding his decisions.
