Tragic Murder in Beaumont, Texas
A 25-year-old woman shot and killed a 16-year-old girl in a desperate bid to protect her boyfriend’s reputation after the teenager became pregnant with his child. Both perpetrators now face decades behind bars for the chilling crime.
Katelynn Stone, 16, was discovered deceased in a bedroom at a home on Kolbs Corner Road in Beaumont, Texas, in March 2022. The case exposed a volatile love triangle fueled by fear of scandal and legal repercussions.
The Deadly Love Triangle
Stone lived with 21-year-old Cody Lee Arnold and had been in a relationship with him. Prosecutors revealed that Stone recently learned she might be pregnant, a situation Arnold viewed as a threat to his reputation and potential charges related to a minor.
Arnold was also romantically involved with 25-year-old Chelsea Shipp. Investigators determined this dynamic led to the murder plot.
Prosecutor’s Account of the Motive
During the trial, Prosecutor Jimmy Hamm outlined the motive to jurors. “They were seen together. They were talking about what they were going to do,” Hamm stated in opening arguments. “They were smoking meth that entire weekend to build up the courage to kill that girl.”
The Crime Unfolds
Arnold told detectives he and Shipp used methamphetamine before the incident. He claimed he left the room where Stone slept, then returned to find Shipp standing over her with a gun. Arnold watched as Shipp fired the fatal shot.
He then placed a bag over Stone’s head because he “did not want to look at it,” according to his statement. Arnold failed to report the killing, leaving the body in the home from around 2 p.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday, when Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered it.
Arrests and Sentencing
Authorities arrested Arnold first, followed by a public search for Shipp, who was soon apprehended. Prosecutors argued the killing aimed to prevent Arnold from being labeled a sex offender due to his relationship with a minor.
A Jefferson County jury convicted Arnold of murder and related charges, sentencing him to 34 years in prison. Shipp accepted a plea deal and received 40 years behind bars.
