David Beckham’s influence extends far beyond the football pitch, particularly during his transformative stint with LA Galaxy starting in 2007. The former midfielder connected with American sports icons, including ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky of the Los Angeles Kings.
Gretzky’s Shift from Soccer Skeptic to Enthusiast
Wayne Gretzky, not previously a fan of European-style football, discovered a new appreciation after watching Beckham perform. Gretzky shared fond memories of Beckham’s exceptional play and a heartfelt act of kindness toward his then-eight-year-old son.
“When I was in LA, David Beckham came to LA,” Gretzky recalled in an interview with TNT Sports. “I did not know a lot about soccer and I said, ‘I have got to see this guy play.’ He was so incredible, it was so much fun to watch him play. And more importantly, my son, at the time he was eight, we went down to the locker room and he took my son around and got every player in the team to sign his jersey. So I have got a great deal of respect for athletes who are really nice and perform well under pressure also.”
Beckham’s Lasting Impact in MLS
Beckham featured in over 100 matches for LA Galaxy, capping his career with an MLS Cup victory in 2012. He later became co-owner of Inter Miami, which secured the MLS Cup for the first time in 2025.
Gretzky’s Growing Soccer Involvement
Gretzky’s interest in football deepened over the years. He took part in the World Cup 2026 draw, where Canada—co-hosting with Mexico and the United States under manager Jesse Marsch—landed in a group with Qatar, Switzerland, and the winner of the European play-off featuring Italy, Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Wales.
England, where Beckham shone in multiple World Cups, drew Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.
