Bodhana Sivanandan: 11-Year-Old Becomes Youngest British Women’s Chess Champion
SHARE

An 11-year-old chess prodigy, Bodhana Sivanandan, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever Women’s Chess Champion of Britain. Achieving this remarkable feat before starting secondary school, Bodhana secured the title at the prestigious nine-day British Championships held at the University of Warwick. Her victory marks a significant milestone, surpassing a record previously held since 1939.

A Prodigy’s Path to the Championship

Bodhana’s journey to the championship was nothing short of extraordinary. In the decisive rapid-chess playoff, she faced off against Ireland’s Trisha Kanyamarala, a talented 14-year-old who herself holds the Woman Grandmaster title. Bodhana emerged victorious, demonstrating exceptional skill and composure under pressure. This triumph came after she navigated a field of highly experienced players, including a 39-year-old grandmaster whom she defeated en route to the final.

The young champion’s talent has been recognized by chess experts, with many predicting a bright future that could see her become Britain’s greatest player. Danny Gormally, a Grandmaster providing commentary for the English Chess Federation, expressed his awe during the final moments of the match. “Unreal! Bodhana, or Godhana as I call her has won. She is unbelievable, a generational talent,” he stated, highlighting the rarity and impact of her achievement.

Breaking Records and Inspiring a Nation

Bodhana Sivanandan’s victory shattered the previous record set by Elaine Pritchard, who won the championship in 1939 at the age of 13. Bodhana’s achievement at just 11 years old underscores a new era in British chess. Notably, Bodhana’s only loss during the championship was against fellow young talent Shreyas Royal, a 17-year-old who went on to win the overall British Championship.

The young chess sensation’s rise has garnered national attention. Earlier in her development, when she was just 8 years old, Bodhana, along with Shreyas Royal (then 14), was hosted by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, signaling the recognition of her exceptional abilities at a very young age.

An Unlikely Beginning

Despite her rapid ascent and current mastery of the game, Bodhana Sivanandan only began playing chess six years ago. Her introduction to the game was serendipitous, stemming from a discarded chessboard found in a bag left by a family friend at her home in Harrow, north London, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially intrigued by the aesthetic appeal of the pieces, particularly the knight and queen, she saw them as potential toys.

Her father, possessing only a basic understanding of chess himself, intervened when he explained the importance of the board for playing the game. He then taught Bodhana the fundamentals. From there, her dedication blossomed. She honed her skills through online resources, watching YouTube tutorials, and soon began outplaying her father consistently.

From Local Clubs to European Success

Bodhana’s competitive journey commenced at the Harrow Chess Club in July 2021. Her significant breakthrough occurred in May 2022, at the age of seven, when she participated in the European Schools Championship. In a dominant performance, she won all 24 of her matches, securing three gold medals.

Following this success, Bodhana began competing against players with considerably more experience. Her burgeoning talent was further evidenced when she became the youngest player to avoid defeat against a Grandmaster in a competitive game at the European Rapid and Blitz chess tournaments held in Croatia. This achievement highlighted her ability to hold her own against seasoned professionals.

Looking Ahead: Ambitions Beyond the Title

While celebrating her historic win as Britain’s youngest Women’s Chess Champion, Bodhana Sivanandan remains focused on future aspirations. She expressed her contentment with the title but emphasized her drive for continued improvement and achievement. “I want to become a grandmaster as soon as possible,” she stated, underscoring her ambition to reach the highest echelons of the chess world.

Her remarkable story, from discovering a forgotten chessboard to becoming a national champion before her teenage years, serves as an inspiration. Bodhana’s dedication, natural talent, and forward-looking perspective position her as a significant figure in the future of chess, both in Britain and on the international stage.

Overall British Championship Context

The overall British Championship saw Shreyas Royal, the 17-year-old from southeast London, emerge as the victor. Royal, who had become Britain’s youngest-ever Grandmaster in 2024, topped the standings after nine rounds. He finished half a point ahead of two established English Grandmasters: Luke McShane and the nine-time champion Michael Adams. Royal’s performance further highlighted the emergence of a new generation of top-tier chess talent in Britain.
