The fitness community is in mourning following the tragic death of Amanda Wakut, a 33-year-old bodybuilder and mother, who was fatally shot in her Lakewood, Ohio home early Sunday morning. The incident occurred just hours after Wakut had participated in her final competitive event.
Tragic Discovery and Suspect’s Demise
Authorities responded to a call at a residence on Chesterland Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, discovering Wakut and another victim, 35-year-old Richard Eastin of Cleveland, deceased in the kitchen. Preliminary reports indicate that a 45-year-old man from Fairview Park had contacted his ex-wife, confessing to shooting two individuals at the home and expressing intent to take his own life.
Upon arrival, law enforcement observed a pickup truck speeding away from the scene. A pursuit ensued, leading the suspect to stop on Warren Road. He exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and died by suicide. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Life Dedicated to Fitness and Family
Wakut had spent Saturday showcasing her dedication at the Battle At The Bridge Regional Competition. Friends and family now understand this was her last time on stage. She is survived by her seven-year-old son, Landyn.
A GoFundMe campaign established in Wakut’s memory highlights her profound love for her son. The campaign states, “Amanda loved her son Landyn more than anything. She not only taught him how to be strong, but all of her clients, friends, and loved ones. She always had a smile on her face and had a sense of humor that we will all grieve the loss of.” It further emphasizes her positive influence: “She helped the people around her be better. Whether that was in perfecting their form, demonstrating dedication, determination, and excellence, or simply showing up when you needed a friend. She was a true friend that always had a helping hand or funny joke when you needed it most.”
Community Mourns a Beloved Coach
Wakut was also recognized as a dedicated powerlifting coach associated with Full Send Powerlifting. She had cultivated a strong following among her clients and fellow athletes in the Cleveland area. A statement from Full Send Powerlifting expressed the profound loss: “I’ve been staring at this screen for a long time, trying to find the right words. There are none. I wish with everything I have that I didn’t have to write this post. But, I know she deserves my words and my love and your support. We lost Amanda. Amanda; our coach, our friend, our beacon. A woman who showed up for everyone around her with so much love, energy, and heart. She was one of a kind, and the world is a dimmer place without her in it.”
The gym is currently gathering photos, videos, and memories of Wakut to create a lasting tribute for her son as he grows.
Fundraising Efforts and Past Achievements
The GoFundMe campaign aiming to cover funeral expenses and ensure financial stability for her son has already surpassed $24,000 in donations. Wakut also had a history as a standout basketball player at Normandy High School before shifting her focus to bodybuilding and powerlifting.
Tributes from friends, family, and fans continue to pour in, reflecting the significant impact Wakut had on those around her. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
