Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Armenia, that the international order will emerge anew from Europe, rejecting submission to a harsher global landscape.
Speaking at the eighth gathering of the bloc on Monday, Carney stated, “It is my strong personal view that the international order will be rebuilt, but it will be rebuilt out of Europe.” He added, “We know nostalgia is not a strategy, but we don’t think that we’re destined to submit to a more transactional, insular and brutal world.”
Canada’s Debut at EPC Summit
Carney’s participation marks Canada’s first appearance at the forum, underscoring deepening transatlantic bonds amid shifting alliances. Leaders convened to address security challenges, including US troop reductions in Europe and regional conflicts.
Call for Rules-Based Renewal
Carney highlighted Europe’s role in upholding values: “We are demonstrating not just the strength of our values in defending a rules-based international order, but also the value of our strength.” The summit emphasized Europe’s push for greater defense autonomy and diplomatic initiative.
Canada also pledged $270 million in military aid to Ukraine, reinforcing support for Kyiv amid ongoing tensions.
