Courtney Love’s 1995 Request for Kurt Cobain Files Denied
SHARE

In October 1995, Courtney Love, the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, formally requested that the Seattle Police Department (SPD) turn over all investigative files related to her husband’s death. The request, submitted by Love’s attorney Bryan Coluccio to then-Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper, sought sole possession of the complete case file, with the stipulation that no copies or further records be retained by the department. Cobain died on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as determined by authorities and accepted by Love at the time.

Background of the Request

The letter from Coluccio, dated October 20, 1995, came approximately a year and a half after Cobain’s death. It stated that both Cobain’s estate and Love-Cobain were satisfied with the SPD’s investigation, which had concluded the musician’s death was a suicide. The attorney emphasized that Love accepted the department’s findings without reservation and considered the matter closed. The request also cited concerns that individuals were attempting to profit from the sale and distribution of materials related to Cobain’s death as a motivating factor for seeking the file.

Contents of the Investigation File

According to the attorney’s letter, the comprehensive investigation file contained a range of sensitive materials. These included personal letters written by Kurt Cobain, documents detailing private financial information, and undeveloped photographic film, such as Polaroid pictures and 35mm film rolls. The desire to secure these personal and potentially sensitive items, alongside the official investigative records, was a key component of Love’s request.

Police Department’s Response and Criticism

The Seattle Police Department denied Courtney Love’s request to hand over the entire investigation file without retaining copies. Former Seattle police Captain Neil Low, who was involved in the initial investigation and had agreed with the suicide ruling, strongly criticized the request. Low stated that such a demand was “totally absurd” and that an “officer of the court” like Coluccio should understand that police agencies are legally obligated to maintain official business and correspondence as public records. He argued that complying with the request would violate statutes concerning public record compliance and accountability.

Concerns Over Evidence Preservation

The organization “Who Killed Kurt?”, which advocates for the re-examination of Cobain’s death amid theories of homicide, also voiced concerns about the implications of Love’s request. Michelle Wilkins, a representative for the group, commented that the preservation of evidence is crucial for the
