Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch confirms plans to honor 25-year-old rookie deckhand Todd Meadows, who died after falling overboard into Alaska’s Bering Sea on February 25. The incident occurred aboard Captain Rick Shelford’s Aleutian Lady vessel during filming for the show’s 22nd season, set to premiere on May 8.
Respectful Tribute Over Footage
Cameras captured the moment Meadows’ harness snapped, but the network will not air the footage out of respect for his wife and three young children. Instead, the premiere episode features a special homage to Meadows. Additional scenes he filmed appear in later episodes, alongside coverage of the tragedy’s impact on crewmates and the fishing community.
Detailed Account of the Rescue
Deckhand Trey John Green III, 30, describes the desperate efforts to save Meadows. The sea was unusually calm with good visibility and the sun still out, yet water temperatures hovered just above freezing.
Green recalls spotting Meadows swimming after he went overboard near a shellfish pot. Rescue swimmer Steve Porter entered the water, but the harness broke. Crew deployed a life sling, hoisting Meadows halfway up before he fell back in, lifeless by the second attempt.
‘Todd’s still alive, he’s still swimming, he’s still trying to hang in there,’ Green said. ‘The first time, he was fighting… And then the second time, he was just lifeless.’
Crew performed CPR for 45 minutes using an AED, but Captain Shelford eventually called it off. Meadows showed signs of turning blue with foam from his mouth and nose. His body, preserved in a tarp and freezer, was later cremated in Anchorage.
Meadows’ death certificate lists drowning with probable hypothermia and cold water submersion as causes. He was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. in an accident. Green notes no crew wore lifejackets, citing the demands of 18-20 hour shifts.
Family’s Wishes and Prior Injury
Meadows’ mother, Angela, urges the network to avoid accident footage.
‘We don’t want to see any footage from the accident… We hope they only air good things of Todd on that boat.’
The family requests clips of him crabbing for memories.
Weeks earlier, Meadows suffered a concussion from a head injury on the vessel, requiring medical leave and recovery in Washington. The family holds no blame for the show regarding that incident.
Ongoing Probe and Support
The U.S. Coast Guard continues investigating. A GoFundMe for his children has raised over $48,000. Multiple camera angles documented the event for season 22.
