Donald Trump asserts that Prince Harry no longer represents the United Kingdom following the royal’s call for stronger American leadership on Ukraine.
Trump’s Response to Harry’s Remarks
During a White House briefing, reporters questioned Trump about Harry’s comments at the Kyiv Security Forum, where the Duke of Sussex urged the U.S. to fulfill its international commitments amid Russia’s war on Ukraine. Trump replied: “Prince Harry? How’s he doing? How’s his wife? Please give her my regards. I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, that’s for sure. I think I am speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry. But I appreciate his advice very much.”
Harry had traveled discreetly to Ukraine for the event but did not name Trump directly. Trump has pledged to end the conflict on his first day if re-elected.
Harry’s Call for U.S. Action
The Duke of Sussex stated: “This is a moment for American leadership, a moment for America to show that it can honour its international treaty obligations, not out of charity but out of its own enduring role in global security and strategic stability. Europe has stood up in profound ways. And that support has mattered, and Ukraine knows it. The task now is to match endurance with speed.”
Background on Royal Ties and Upcoming Visit
Trump has expressed limited enthusiasm for Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, who relocated to Montecito, California, in 2020 after withdrawing from royal duties amid family tensions.
When asked about inviting Harry to dinner during King Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming state visit, Trump sidestepped the question. He added: “He’s a friend of mine. We’re really looking forward to it. We’ve spoken and we’re going to have a great time.”
The king and queen will meet Trump at the White House as part of their four-day U.S. trip starting next Monday. Trump insists the visit can mend strained U.S.-UK relations, exacerbated by ongoing tensions over Iran.
