Djokovic, Sabalenka Face Tough US Open Mixed Doubles Draw
SHARE

Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka find themselves in a challenging position in the US Open mixed doubles draw, facing formidable opponents despite their status as top seeds. While their singles rankings secured them direct entry, they are set to compete against the current world No. 1 doubles pairing of Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten. This highly accomplished duo had to navigate the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw, highlighting the unexpected difficulty of the path ahead for the singles stars.

A Shifting Landscape in the Mixed Doubles Draw

Initially, Djokovic and Sabalenka were slated to face wildcards Leylah Fernandez and Frances Tiafoe. However, their withdrawal after the draw’s completion necessitated a reshuffling of the pairings. This change led to Djokovic and Sabalenka being matched against a qualifying team, with the addition of lucky losers further altering the competitive field. The US Open’s decision to allow doubles rankings to influence preliminary round entries means that teams emerging from qualifying can possess significant doubles pedigree, potentially making them unexpected underdogs against even the most decorated singles players.

Elite Doubles Pedigree on Display

The opponents, Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten, represent a significant challenge due to their established dominance in doubles tennis. Siniakova, a Czech star, boasts an impressive resume that includes 12 Grand Slam doubles titles across both women’s and mixed categories, alongside Olympic gold medals. She has held the WTA doubles No. 1 ranking for a remarkable 196 weeks. Her partner, British player Henry Patten, has also achieved top-tier success, securing three Grand Slam doubles titles, including two at Wimbledon. He has also claimed the ATP Finals and two Masters 1000 titles, reaching the world No. 1 doubles ranking for the first time in the summer.

Siniakova and Patten demonstrated their prowess by winning their qualifying matches. They defeated the wildcard pairing of Tatjana Maria and Valentin Vacherot in their opening qualifying round before overcoming Americans Peyton Stearns and Christian Harrison to secure their spot in the main draw. Their victory in qualifying sets up a high-stakes encounter with Djokovic and Sabalenka.

Past Doubles Success and Current Challenges

While Aryna Sabalenka has previous experience as a doubles No. 1 and has won two Grand Slam doubles titles with Elise Mertens, these achievements occurred over five years ago. The current landscape of doubles specialists presents a different caliber of challenge. Similarly, Novak Djokovic, while a dominant force in singles, has a less extensive recent record in high-level doubles competition.

Other Notable Pairings Emerge from Qualifying and Lucky Loser Spots

The mixed doubles draw has seen other compelling stories unfold. Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool, another team that advanced through qualifying, are set to face the highly anticipated pairing of Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz. Routliffe, a New Zealand native, is a former doubles No. 1 and a two-time US Open women’s doubles champion. Glasspool, from Britain, is also a former doubles No. 1 and a recent Wimbledon champion.

In another intriguing matchup, Kiki Mladenovic and Marcelo Arevalo, who entered the main draw as lucky losers, will compete against the Czech duo of Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik. Mladenovic is a decorated player with a history of success, including a former doubles No. 1 ranking, seven Grand Slam women’s doubles titles (most recently at Wimbledon), and three mixed doubles Major victories. Arevalo has also reached the top of the doubles rankings, won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon this year, and is a two-time men’s doubles Grand Slam champion.

Defending Champions Receive Wildcard Entry

The defending champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, have received a wildcard into the main draw, recognizing their victories in 2024 and 2025. Last year, they were the sole doubles team in the field and successfully retained their title, even amidst significant changes to the US Open’s mixed doubles format.

Conclusion: A Competitive Mixed Doubles Field

The US Open mixed doubles competition this year presents a uniquely challenging and unpredictable field. The presence of elite doubles specialists like Siniakova and Patten, who have earned their main draw spots through rigorous qualifying, alongside established champions and lucky losers, ensures that every match will be a test of skill and strategy. For top singles players like Djokovic and Sabalenka, navigating this competitive landscape requires adapting quickly to the nuances of doubles play against opponents who specialize in the format.
