Teenager Critically Injured in Daylight Hit-and-Run
Distressing CCTV footage has emerged showing the harrowing moment a 19-year-old man was struck by a motorbike in a shocking hit-and-run incident. The victim, identified as Ryan Cameron, 22, sustained life-changing injuries after being hit by a rider who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Rider’s Reckless Behavior Led to Collision
The incident occurred on May 10, 2025, in Hartlepool, County Durham. The motorbike rider, Liam Kenny, 19, is reported to have consumed six pints of lager and taken cocaine before getting on the unregistered and uninsured motorbike. He was attempting to ride home at the time of the collision.
CCTV captures Kenny speeding through busy streets before colliding with Mr. Cameron, who was waiting to cross a road. The force of the impact sent Mr. Cameron airborne. Kenny, who also sustained injuries, fled the scene on foot, leaving Mr. Cameron to be aided by bystanders.
Victim Suffers Severe Injuries, Manhunt Launched
Mr. Cameron was airlifted to a local hospital to receive treatment for his severe injuries. Simultaneously, law enforcement initiated a search for Kenny. He was subsequently apprehended.
An alcohol breath test administered to Kenny revealed a reading of 100mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 35mcg. Further toxicology reports indicated he was nearly four-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit for driving and 12 times over the drug limit.
Justice Served: Rider Sentenced for Dangerous Driving
Kenny, a resident of Hartlepool, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison and disqualified from driving for 51 months. The sentencing took place at Teesside Crown Court on June 1.
Court proceedings revealed that Kenny had spent approximately six hours drinking at a pub before taking possession of a motorbike that did not belong to him. The CCTV evidence presented at trial showed Kenny exceeding the 20mph speed limit and riding in a dangerous manner on Northgate immediately prior to the collision with Mr. Cameron.
Father’s Heartbreak
Video footage released by Cleveland Police features Mr. Cameron’s father, Andy, recounting the devastating moment he learned of his son’s accident. He described how his son’s mother, unable to articulate the situation verbally, showed him the scene via video call, revealing his son lying on the ground with people attempting to help. Mr. Cameron’s father expressed his deep distress and anger over Kenny’s decision to abandon his son at the scene.
Police Warning on Impaired and Dangerous Driving
Detective Constable Aileen Ward commented on the case, emphasizing the severe repercussions of dangerous driving. She stated, “This case highlights the devastating consequences that dangerous driving can have on individuals, families and communities.”
DC Ward further elaborated, “In this case, excessive speed and impairment through alcohol and drugs were key factors. This was a 20mph area designed to protect the public, yet Liam Kenny chose to ignore the law. Driving under the influence and at speed significantly impairs judgement and reaction times, putting lives at serious risk.”
The police representative issued a stern warning: “We want this case to serve as a clear warning: choosing to drive or ride while under the influence, or to ignore speed limits, can destroy lives, including your own. It is simply not worth the risk.”
Victim’s Ongoing Rehabilitation and Motorbike Owner’s Conviction
Mr. Cameron is continuing his rehabilitation following a significant brain injury sustained in the crash. The owner of the motorbike, Adam Nixon, 22, was also convicted. He pleaded guilty to permitting the use of a vehicle without a license and insurance, and to drug driving. Nixon received a 17-month driving ban and was ordered to pay a fine and court costs.
