Dyson, the technology company known for its innovative home appliances, has launched a new high-tech electric toothbrush featuring an integrated camera, signaling a significant expansion into the dental care market. Company chief engineer Jake Dyson revealed the new product, the Dyson CameraJet, alongside a suite of other recently released gadgets, including advanced robot vacuums and large air purifiers. The CameraJet, priced at approximately £420, is designed to address common challenges in oral hygiene, such as effective flossing and thorough brushing.
Revolutionizing Oral Hygiene with the CameraJet
Jake Dyson, son of founder Sir James Dyson, explained the inspiration behind the CameraJet, drawing parallels to the company’s early work in vacuum cleaners. He highlighted that many people find traditional flossing difficult and time-consuming, often leading to it being skipped. “If you think about looking after your teeth, you have to brush your teeth twice a day. You’re supposed to floss them twice a day. You’re supposed to rinse them twice a day. And flossing is extremely awkward and difficult to do,” Dyson stated.
To overcome these hurdles, Dyson integrated a miniature camera into the electric toothbrush. This camera, powered by machine learning trained on hundreds of thousands of images, can identify different types of teeth and gums. It then uses a targeted jet of mouthwash to clean areas that might be missed. “The camera has the ability – and it’s been trained on machine learning from hundreds of thousands of images – to identify all different gum types and teeth and mouth types around the world,” Dyson elaborated. “So it’s very, very accurate at targeting the gaps in your mouth.”
A key technical challenge was ensuring the camera’s visibility. Standard toothpastes create foam that would obstruct the view. Dyson addressed this by developing a proprietary non-foaming toothpaste specifically for the CameraJet system.
Privacy and Data Insights
Addressing potential privacy concerns about having a camera in the bathroom, Dyson emphasized the system’s security. While users can connect to the MyDyson app to view a live feed from inside their mouth, Jake Dyson assured that the data remains on the device. “As a company, we don’t see the data – we can’t see anything,” he confirmed. This feature allows users to monitor changes in their oral health over time and identify issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Dyson envisions this technology potentially leading to a healthcare revolution, enabling users to share AI-processed oral health data with their dentists for better tracking of gum health. Furthermore, the CameraJet is designed to educate users on proper brushing techniques. “The other great thing about the product is it’s training you to brush your teeth properly,” Dyson noted. “If you move in the way you should do, it’ll hit every single gap on time when you’re brushing your teeth, which is the aim.”
Broader Product Innovations from Dyson
The CameraJet was unveiled at a Dyson event that also showcased other significant product releases. Among them was the Dyson HushJet Big+Quiet Cool Pure+Formaldehyde, a large air purifier priced at £900. This device features a new HushJet nozzle, inspired by silencer technology used in jet engines, which allows for powerful airflow with minimal noise.
Dyson also introduced upgrades to its robotic vacuum cleaner line. The new Dyson R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV Robot Vacuum incorporates a UV light system designed to enhance cleaning efficacy. It utilizes different light spectrums: a green light to highlight dust and debris, and a blue light to detect germs and other microscopic contaminants. “We have a new UV light. We have a green light, which shows up all the dust particles and dirt and the floor and hair,” Dyson explained. “And then we have this blue light, which shows up germs and dog pee and things like that. So you can really see when your floor is completely clean and germ-free.” He added that pet owners might be particularly surprised by the level of detail revealed by the system.
Future Outlook for Dyson’s Dental Range
Following the success of its haircare products, such as the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer launched in 2016, Dyson is now strategically focusing on expanding its new dental category. Jake Dyson expressed confidence in the future of this product line, stating, “We’ve sort of revolutionised what toothbrushes are, and entered into another category. Which we hope will explode into multiple products, and it will.” The company aims to leverage its research and development expertise to continuously improve oral care routines and products.
The introduction of the CameraJet and the planned expansion of the dental range signify Dyson’s ambition to disrupt established markets with technology-driven solutions, applying its engineering prowess to everyday health and hygiene practices.
