First Arrest Made in Violent Portsmouth Migrant Protest

Authorities have made the first arrest in connection with the anti-migrant demonstrations that occurred in Portsmouth last weekend, which saw clashes with police and damage to official vehicles. A 42-year-old man from the Paulsgrove area of Portsmouth was taken into custody on Friday morning. He faces accusations of violent disorder and assaulting a police constable while on duty.

Details of the Portsmouth Demonstrations

The events in question unfolded on Sunday night at Eastney Marina. Approximately 200 individuals, identified as anti-migrant activists, gathered to prevent the departure of around 120 migrants who had arrived in the area after crossing the English Channel. The migrants were housed in three coaches, and protesters blocked the sole access road to the marina, leading to an eight-hour standoff. By the early hours of Monday morning, the crowd had dispersed, allowing the coaches to leave.

Hampshire Police confirmed the arrest, refuting claims circulating online that the protest had been peaceful. The force indicated that this is the first of several anticipated arrests as their investigation progresses. They are collaborating with various agencies, including Border Force, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, the RNLI, and Portsmouth City Council, to thoroughly examine the disorder.

Impact of the Disorder

During the confrontations, several police vehicles, as well as vehicles belonging to the coastguard and Border Force, sustained damage. A small number of police officers received treatment for injuries at the scene, though none were reported as serious. Authorities have stated that they are meticulously reviewing video footage collected from the event, having already examined three-quarters of the material.

Police Response and Future Actions

Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson of Hampshire Police addressed the situation, emphasizing that the arrest is a direct result of the ongoing review of evidence. He reiterated the police’s stance that violence and criminal damage are unacceptable, even within the context of a protest, and vowed to take firm action against those responsible for the violent public disorder.

“Clearly events on Sunday evening were not peaceful protest, rather violent public disorder, and this will not be tolerated as we work to keep our wider communities in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight safe,” Rowlinson stated. He explained that immediate arrests at the time of such incidents are not always feasible, as evidence often needs careful review to identify specific individuals involved in offenses.

Rowlinson issued a clear warning to all participants, stating, “This arrest is the first of what we fully anticipate to be a number of arrests as we identify those responsible for any assaults to officers, criminal damage to vehicles, or other criminal offences committed on Sunday evening.” He expressed that the officers involved were working diligently to ensure public safety and did not deserve to be assaulted or subjected to online abuse.

The police force also indicated they would work with other law enforcement agencies to address any online threats made against officers or partner agency staff. The arrest serves as a significant warning to anyone considering engaging in similar disruptive or unlawful behavior at future events, with the police committing to taking action and seeking prosecution where possible.

Context of Previous Demonstrations

The Portsmouth protest followed a similar demonstration that took place the previous Saturday morning in Dover. In that incident, hundreds of individuals, many wearing face coverings and dark clothing, blocked access to the port for several hours. The events in Portsmouth involved riot police being deployed to manage the situation after a dinghy carrying asylum seekers was escorted to the shore.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigation

The incident highlights the escalating tensions surrounding migrant arrivals and the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing large-scale public demonstrations. The police’s commitment to a thorough investigation, involving multiple agencies and extensive video evidence review, underscores the seriousness with which they are treating the disorder. The ongoing investigation aims to hold accountable all individuals who engaged in criminal activity during the protests, ensuring public safety and upholding the law.

Authorities are urging anyone with information or further video evidence related to the events at Eastney Marina to come forward. The investigation remains active, and further updates are expected as more individuals are identified and potentially arrested.
