Veteran radio broadcaster Graeme Gilbert has passed away at the age of 76. His death on Friday followed a prolonged struggle with acute leukaemia. Gilbert was a familiar voice on late-night radio for decades, most notably as the host of Talk Tonight on the 2SM Super Radio Network, a role he held from 2000 until his retirement in 2023.

A Lifelong Passion for Radio

The Super Radio Network released a statement remembering Gilbert as a deeply cherished figure. “Graeme was deeply loved by his audience across the Super Radio Network, and that affection was mutual,” the statement read. “He genuinely adored his listeners and had a lifelong passion for the radio industry. He truly loved what he did behind the microphone.” His program was broadcast across all stations within the Super Radio Network, reaching listeners nationwide.

During his tenure, Gilbert consistently achieved strong ratings, particularly through the Newcastle station 2HD. The network highlighted that his success was a testament to his talent and the genuine connection he forged with his audience over many years. For more than two decades, his Sydney-based show was broadcast to approximately 30 stations across regional New South Wales and Queensland, establishing him as a significant presence in Australian radio.

Broadcasting Career and Political Aspirations

Gilbert’s journey in broadcasting began at 2HD in Newcastle. He subsequently secured prominent announcing positions in various states, steadily building an impactful and enduring career. Beyond his radio work, Gilbert also ventured into politics in the 1990s. He stood as a Liberal Party candidate for the Tasmanian seat of Franklin in the 1993 federal election, though he was unsuccessful, losing by a margin of 9.86 percent.

Throughout his career, Gilbert received accolades for his work. He was recognized with a B&T Award for Best News Presenter and an Australian Commercial Radio Award (formerly known as a Raward) for Best Current Affairs Commentator. Reflecting on his dedication, Gilbert once remarked about his profession, “I love it – it’s never a chore turning up for this job!”

Retirement and Final Months

Graeme Gilbert retired from the airwaves in 2023, concluding over twenty years with the 2SM Super Radio Network. Following his retirement, he had been residing in aged care facilities since October of the previous year. His departure from the microphone marked the end of an era for many listeners who had followed his late-night program for years.

A Memorable On-Air Quirk

Listeners of Gilbert’s late-night show, Talk Tonight, might recall a peculiar running gag that spanned several years. In May 2006, during a trivia segment, numerous callers incorrectly identified “India” as the Premier of Tasmania when the correct answer was Paul Lennon. This misstatement became an inside joke, with callers occasionally interjecting “India” into conversations on the program for years afterward, adding a unique and memorable element to his broadcasts.

Legacy in Australian Radio

Graeme Gilbert’s extensive career left an indelible mark on Australian radio. His ability to connect with listeners on a national level through his talkback program demonstrated a rare talent for engaging with the public on a daily basis. His dedication to the medium, spanning over two decades with 2SM, solidified his reputation as a respected and beloved broadcaster. The Super Radio Network’s statement underscored the mutual affection between Gilbert and his audience, emphasizing his genuine passion for his work and the industry.

His passing signifies the loss of a significant voice in Australian talkback radio. Gilbert’s contributions, from his early career beginnings to his long-standing role on Talk Tonight, have cemented his place in the history of the medium. The network’s acknowledgement of his consistent survey success further highlights his professional achievements and the lasting impact he had on radio listenership across Australia.
