Hilary Duff Opens Up About First Marriage’s End
Hilary Duff, the 38-year-old former Disney star, shares insights into her divorce from first husband Mike Comrie, a retired NHL player. The couple separated in 2014 after less than four years of marriage, with the divorce finalizing in 2016. Duff began recording her fifth studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., with her future second husband, Matthew Koma, in 2013 while still married to Comrie.
“It just got to a point where it wasn’t going to be,” Duff stated on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “I think he was good with it because I was like, ‘Here’s this, this, this.’ And he was like, ‘Great.’ This was before conscious uncoupling was a thing.”
Collaborative Split and Family Priorities
Duff emphasizes the mutual nature of the decision. “I’m not just like, ‘I up and left.’ It was a collaborative thing that needed to happen. But you gotta fight for yourself and it doesn’t matter that you have kids. Your kids are going to be okay,” she added.
The split proved challenging with their young son, Luca Cruz Comrie, who turns 14 on March 20. The co-parents recently attended his soccer match in Beverly Hills on January 13. “That was a really tough call because we had not even a two-year-old kid,” Duff recalled. She prioritized peace, ensuring handoffs included park visits or meals to keep Luca comfortable.
“It was a really scary time to just not want to f*** up your kid,” Duff continued. “You put all of your stuff aside… to just make sure that he was okay.”
Therapy, New Relationships, and Current Family
Duff underwent extensive therapy while dating personal trainer Jason Walsh and Love Machine co-founder Ely Sandvik. She married 38-year-old Koma in 2017. The couple raises daughters Banks (7), Mae (4), and Townes (21 months) in their $3.85 million five-bedroom Beverly Hills home.
