Refund Processing Timeline

HMRC reviews PAYE records for the 2025/26 tax year beginning in June. The agency aims to finalize all checks by November. Eligible individuals receive refunds via their personal tax account online.

A taxpayer, confident of owing a refund due to an incorrect tax code, inquired about confirmation timelines. They asked: “I already know I am entitled to one and roughly how much, but how long will it take you to confirm it?”

HMRC clarified that reviews start in June 2026, with the earliest claim possible then. The taxpayer, who uses the HMRC app, sought an earlier application option, but officials confirmed June 2026 as the start date.

Ways Taxpayers Overpay

Overpayments occur through excess deductions from wages, work-related expenses, pension income, or self-assessment returns. In such cases, HMRC issues a P800 calculation letter detailing the owed amount and claim process.

How to Claim Your Refund

Taxpayers use an online tool on the Government website to check and reclaim overpaid tax. Options include:

  • Online bank transfer via the personal tax account, with funds arriving in five working days.
  • Cheque by post, delivered within six weeks.

Government tools simplify the process, ensuring quick access to owed funds once calculations complete.
