Instagram introduces Instants, a fresh take on ephemeral photo sharing designed for spontaneous snaps. This feature appears in the primary Instagram app and as a standalone application named Instants, enabling users to capture and share photos that vanish after friends view, react to, or reply on them.
How Instants Works in the Main App
Users access Instants directly from the direct messages inbox by tapping the photo stack icon in the bottom right corner. Captured images allow only a caption addition—no editing tools, filters, or camera roll uploads are available. Recipients can be selected from close friends or mutual connections before sending.
An undo option provides a brief window to retract an Instant before it reaches friends. Incoming Instants offer a snooze function: hold the icon and swipe right to pause notifications, or swipe left to resume.
Snapped photos remain archived for up to one year, with the option to compile them into story recaps for later sharing.
Dedicated Instants App
Instagram has tested the standalone Instants app in select countries on both iOS and Android devices. “We’ve been testing Instants for a while, and one thing we heard was that people wanted a quicker, easier way to get into the camera,” Instagram stated in a recent blog post.
Safety and Privacy Features
Instants incorporates Instagram’s standard safety measures, including user blocking and muting. Teen accounts under parental supervision automatically apply shared time limits, screenshot and screen recording blocks, and restricted access from 10 PM to 7 AM. Parents receive notifications when a supervised teen downloads the Instants app.
Instagram’s History with Ephemeral Sharing
This launch continues Instagram’s efforts to rival platforms like Snapchat and BeReal. Previous attempts include the 2014 Bolt app for rapid photo sharing with friends and Candid Stories, a BeReal-inspired feature released four years ago.
